Best Final Fantasy Game (in Off-topic)

I am looking to buy a final fantasy game for the PS2. I haven't played any of them before, so I want to know what the best one to get is.

Start with VII then work your way up!

I liked FF1-FF3 (US versions), FF7 and FF8. The others were ok, but were more movie and less game.

ah 3 is classic. you should get anthology, play through those, then go up.

Second Tactics as the best. (PS1 Tactics, that is.)

tactics is great- one of my favorites of all times (i've spent 100+ hrs, twice)- but i wouldn't group it with the rest; it's not the same genre as the series that is typically connoted with "final fantasy"

I really enjoyed all of them for the most part, but I guess X and X-2 were among my favorites. I am almost through 12, and I really enjoy it as well, though it took some getting used to ^_^

Playstation FF's don't get much better than FF7. They are all great though, except for FF9. Yuck. I hated that one. I anti-vote it.

FF6 however, is better than all if you ask me (which you did not but hey...) :P

Uh, no. You'll miss out on 6, which easily trumps the latter end of the series combined.

7 is good, but vastly overrated compared to 6. Anime fans are most of the reason why.

8 had the Junk-ction system. Misspelling intentional. They did a lot of things right in 8, however, that they dropped the ball on in previous installments. The Junction system and the over emphasis on Summons just scars it though.

9 would have been fine, if the battle system wasn't as slow as a fat turtle. If they had beefed it up to a speed comparable to 8, it would have been one of the best.

10 was among the best. 10-2 is underrated, mainly because of it's girlish nature.

I don't play 11.

12 was the next best after 6. I loved this game, though despite its achievements, it pales compared to the near flawless work of art that was 6.

If we're counting Tactics, it was up there with 6. Truly a masterpiece.

Tactics Advance was dumbed down for a younger audience, and the changes to the job system were not for the better. It gets points for introducing the races of Ivalice though.

I'm playing Tactics A2 now. While it stays very close to the first Advance, and the story sucks, it makes several needed changes to the game play, and I'm enjoying it far more this time around.

I feel like Lord Bob just channeled me. I'm in the same boat exactly except I've never played FF6. I'm even playing FFTA2 right now. Talk about weird.

As far as PS2-only FF games go, I'd start with FFX. It's easy to get in to, has great characters (sans Tidus, who is a total joke), has a fantastic battle system, and has a fun end-game (if you don't mind a bit of tedium, the Monster Ranch is a lot of fun). Sure, FF7 is great but I wouldn't start with it. I actually don't even really enjoy it any more.

FFXII is also a great game, but it plays more like a "cinematic adventure" than an RPG. It's a lot of watching the screen and making decisions every so often. The gambit system (basically, you customize your party's AI) is a nifty idea but makes the game feel... like an un-RPG. I would definitely play XII but not until you're in the mood for an engaging story with poor gameplay. :)

Basically, start with FFX. Move on to either FF7 or FFXII depending on your mood. From there... your pick!

Oh, and if you don't mind looking lame in front of all your totally awesome RPG friends, FFX-2 is a very good game. It's a bit of a pain to get the more interesting classes, but it was a surprisingly good play for me. Granted, I only breezed through it once (compared to the 4 times I've completely cleared FFX, and even tried a NSG game), but it was fun. Prepare to be once again disappointed by a dismal storyline, though. :)

I do have to agree, though. FFX is memorable, has great characters (even the ones you hate! I can't express how much I hate Seymour!), and a great storyline. Plus there's lots to do!

The only other games I can really comment on are FFXII and FFX-2.

X-2 is a good game as a whole, if you can get past the fact that there doesn't seem to be a single male in the entire game (only kidding, but it does have some girlish elements). The dressphere concept is good, there's plenty of side-quests to do, and you can keep trying and trying again to get that perfect ending. :P

FFXII is a great game if you don't mind the 'new' combat system. I say 'new' because it's still essentially turn-based, just more loosely. You can always play the pausing mode, where the game pauses while you choose actions. Makes it almost exactly the same as any other FF game in terms of battles. I don't see why people hate it so much, it's basically the exact same. :/ As usual, plenty to do and a great storyline. The only gripe I had with it (if you could call it that) is that I found the main storyline a bit too easy. Once you figure out how to use the Gambit system to its fullest, battles basically play themselves out. I can't comment on the extra stuff, since my memory card had beer spilled on it (darn sister and her parties!), and I've had to start all over. I'd imagine all the extra stuff would pose a challenge, though.

So... get any and all FF games. You can't *really* go wrong. It's FF!

i played X for like 462 hours so My vote goes there i loved that game!

i love all of them, i just finish today ffvii crisis core :)

I have only tried the first three mainly cause i like older games .... but i definitely have to put in a vote for FFX i have played it 5 times and somehow always get cut off before i get to finish and it is still awesome even without finishing ... q=-P

I have found that I have much more fun practically ignoring the gambit system in FFXII. I guess I'm just a control freak like that xD

I agree with hakai to an extent. Usually I control Vaan and have the other 2 characters controlled by gambits. If all 3 are just on autopilot, you're really just watching a movie.

start with FF7 for sure!

this game was the best of the series everybody agrees.
Sold more than any other game of the FF legacy, also has the best history and fight system, while has amazing minigames also to play, like chocobo stuff ( to do the golden chocobo takes a hell lot of time).
FF8 its a complete different system but it rocks also,
FF9 changed everything, its very cool game to play and funny, looks more like kingdom hearts, but ff9 its boring easy and fast to reach final.

Cant say about X and beyond because i never played.

Never played it. Trust me, you don't want to. From what I understand, it's a six-year-old brother-and-sister game. Who wants Daffy Duck alongside... say, Sephiroth or Kuja? Come on, guys, seriously?

I played FF8 more than was healthy.

I never even got out of the city in FF7. I guess I really didn't care for it. Played stuff like Crash Bandicoot and Wild7 instead. Additionally, in the RPG realm, I was playing Wild Arms and King's Field like crazy. More recently, on the PS3, Oblivion has ruled me...I won't need to play any more King's Field games, I doubt they'll even bother to make them any more. But for games with the most cryptic story ever, told only via what you do in-game, KF is, well, unparalleled (most would probably think that a good thing...)

For the PS2, I'd go for FFX for the huge side mission. If you want graphical beauty, than I'd have to say FFXII has a slight upper hand. Also, FFXII is the easier one, but don't use the gambit-system until your 2nd go at it.

Only ones I've played were 7 and 8. I absolutely loved 7! :)

I absolutely adored FFXI Online. I wish that I could play it on my PS3, actually.

i completely forgot about tactics, and yes i know for this i should be dragged out back and shot, numerous times, but i change my original statement of 10, to Tactics. (ps1)

Beyond a shadow of a doubt, the best FF so far. 6 (If that's the one with Terra, versions mess me up...) and 2 are classics. You should play them.

But they're classics. ;)

6 and 8 (?? The junction one) could be easily broken. It was very easy to make a character immune to everything with a high enough Evasion score in 6, and if you got into the anti RPG mindset for 8, and refused to fight/level up outside boss fights (not too hard to do) until you could junction end game summons with +Stats, then grind to 99 (easily...), 8 became a joke.

6 does have a very good storyline to it, and a lot of secrets.

But start with 7 first. ;)

They are almost all good in their own way and worth playing. FF Anthologies is where I would start as they are very very well done. I would have to say Tactics for my all-time favorite. 6-7 are both held in very high regard, though I would have to say 6 is possibly the best in the 1-12. 8 and 9 are either hit or miss, you'll either love them to death or absolutely hate them (or so the story seems to go). X is worth playing but I didn't enjoy it and it remains the only FF game I haven't beaten. (Yes I've seen the ending, and I got bored just before the last mountain thing where you go up the mountain and fight sin)

X-2 was aimed at the female player base, it's terribly easy, and the ending will make you want to throw your controller at the wall.

11 will never be better than WoW

12 was well made for a PS2 game has a very nice finish graphics wise, and I actually enjoyed it more than I will admit. There is a very dedicated player base for 12 bent on beating the game with certain handicaps and challenges. 12 basically demolished any sense of "Job-Class" because you can pretty much make any character anything you want.

My biggest problem with 12 was how easy it is. You can 3 mage almost the entire first half of the game, and the "end game bosses" are junk and boring. They are not hard, but they have like 50 million HP. Not like FF7's Ruby/Emerald weapon hard... Just 7 hours of ZzZzZ

The thing I liked most about 12 is you can "create" an order of operations and the game's AI can control your team in battle, meaning a lot less hand-ache ^^

Crisis Core is fun if you're a fan of 7, the controls are a little hard to pick up at first but only because it's so different than CoD4 :P A Must have if you're a fan of Vincent.
