self-sacrificial protection (in Off-topic)

if you could endure pain so that someone else wouldn't have to, would you? (i.e. real-world phantom link :P )

what if it were a loved one (significant other, family member, friend)?

what about an enemy?

Lord Bob March 26 2009 2:12 PM EDT

"if you could endure pain so that someone else wouldn't have to, would you?"

That depends on who it is, and what kind of pain.

"what if it were a loved one (significant other, family member, friend)?"

Maybe, again, depending on the factors noted above.

"what about an enemy?"

No. Absolutely not.

Mesoshort March 26 2009 2:13 PM EDT

I have endured pain before so someone else doesn't have to: It's called being a mom T_T

No but really, I would do anything to keep my baby girl from harm. Anyone else? Likely not.

BadFish March 26 2009 2:15 PM EDT

Maybe if the person I'm enduring pain for has high AC, or a Mage Shield, and I have a lot of HP remaining.

Hakai [Aye Phelta Thi] March 26 2009 2:17 PM EDT

*gasps* Not even for me, Meso?!? *sob*

QBJohnnywas March 26 2009 2:27 PM EDT

Friends and family without question or doubt.

Enemy? No, they can have all the pain thank you very much.

And even better would be taking pain from my friends and family and giving it to an enemy.

Yeah, that would be a skill worth having.

Lord Bob March 26 2009 2:38 PM EDT

"And even better would be taking pain from my friends and family and giving it to an enemy. Yeah, that would be a skill worth having."

New Skill!

Redirect Damage: all the damage you take is inflicted on your opponent. You can't lose!

Mesoshort March 26 2009 2:39 PM EDT

Talk about your OP strat ;D That is just insane right there.

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] March 26 2009 2:40 PM EDT

Yes, i'm just that silly. I would gladly take pain away from anyone. Even the soulless villians i'd rather hurt. I believe that alleviation of suffering is important, and that having the power to do so would be a great responsibility. While you might end up enabling the actions of others that you do not agree with, the mere possibility that they could through your actions see some part of what is really possible as a human being is worth it.

Lord Bob March 26 2009 2:40 PM EDT

"Talk about your OP strat. That is just insane right there."

Which is why no one should ever, ever be allowed to train that skill for any reason, ever. Except me.

Ernest-Scribbler March 26 2009 2:57 PM EDT

It would hurt my friends if they knew that i thought there band sounds terrible. I really suffer when have to listen and pretend that it sounds good!

So yes i endure pain to stop my friends from suffering!

Cube March 26 2009 4:25 PM EDT

If I had some Trollskin armor, of course.

Otherwise, depends on the person.

iBananco [Blue Army] March 26 2009 4:26 PM EDT

Can't, I have Archery trained.

ScY March 26 2009 6:17 PM EDT

No archery is for noobs who cant hook.

ScY March 26 2009 6:18 PM EDT

^_^

I TAGGED U!

AdminTitan [The Sky Forge] March 26 2009 6:52 PM EDT

Yes, even from my enemies.

Wizard'sFirstRule March 26 2009 8:13 PM EDT

sure, why not. I have built in protection from pain by killing them.

[P]Mitt March 26 2009 8:18 PM EDT

Just give me real-life FoD

Soul Eater March 26 2009 8:27 PM EDT

I would die for a stranger if I had to.

Eurynome Bartleby [Bartleby's] March 26 2009 8:56 PM EDT

I believe it is impossible for me to answer until I am confronted to such a situation. It is very easy to say: ''I would for sure'' because answering the question is relative to my morals, and self-sacrificing is seen as ''good'' in my books. In the heart of any conflict, though, morals have to fight against self-preservation. And I could really not bet on either of the two contestants if such a confrontation was to occur.

So, theoretically speaking, ''I would sacrifice myself'' for someone dear. In practice, maybe not. I hope I never have to find out.

Same thing goes for my enemies, except my default answer, sitting in front of a computer is: ''I'd let them have it.''

kevlar March 26 2009 9:25 PM EDT

I feel it's an extension of the fight or flight reflex.

Eurynome Bartleby [Bartleby's] March 27 2009 1:40 AM EDT

Yes. exactly. From what I have read, it seems my theory was not far from that concept.

Eurynome Bartleby [Bartleby's] March 27 2009 1:47 AM EDT

Relevance or immediate action driven by instinctual need.

My thoughts abbreviated.

Ryuzaki March 27 2009 1:53 AM EDT

Most likely, I probably wouldn't for endure pain for anyone else, I'd like to think there are some who I would make such a sacrifice for, but in reality I probably wouldn't.
I'd rather train some GA and retaliate against whatever's causing the pain.

Brakke Bres [Ow man] March 27 2009 2:25 AM EDT

Brave talk here, if push comes to shove every human chooses self preservation over death or pain.

Basic instinct that is in all of us...

Only human with a high moral or the "hero" gene as they call it, can override this instinct.

So no I would not endure pain for anyone else.
And not pain as in a headache or a papercut, but real excruciating pain. e.g. torture.

But I won't want to see my loved ones hurt if they are threatened with death I would give up my cash/car/just about everything I have. e.g. a robbery.

{WW]Nayab [Cult of the Valaraukar] March 27 2009 2:38 AM EDT

If i took away their pain completely they wouldn't learn.
so i would only do it for those that haven't been given the chance to learn to deal with the pain. for a family member i would probably just help them get through their pain.

NEW SKILL!
Pain Assistance
a portion of the damage dealt to the minion with this trained this turn is turned into HP for your other minions split evenly between them.
Does not prevent any damage dealt.
