Admins: view of the actual tutorial? (in General)

Flamey April 3 2009 10:58 AM EDT

This is one of those things that wont get touched simply due to the fact that a lot of people don't know what's broken. I know Shade at one point took screenshots of each page. They would be nice. If they're outdated, would another admin be kind enough to take the screenshots? IIRC, there was 15-20 pages?

Anywho, if we had a view of it, then we'd be able to fix it easier, or try to fix it. That's Instead of babbling about the tutorial being broken and not knowing what exactly is broken.

Or maybe they could allow you to make a multi JUST for the purpose of testing the tutorial, announced in advance, to be deleted immediately after you're done ?

This is what Shade did for it. I'd be more than willing to given the permission. I understand that admins may not want to waste their time taking and uploading that many screenshots for a community-based project that'll fail in their eyes (All admins are cynical, no? :P)

I helped someone through the tutorial in rl just recently so I got to have a look at it. I just had him run through the tutorial as fast as possible to get it out of the way so I could explain more about the game. It worked just fine that way. From what I saw it looks like the problem isn't so much the tutorial as it is that people don't listen to it. Once you stop following exactly what the tutorial says it starts bugging out and becomes very hard to finish.

One thing I noticed was that it took from start to finish only 9 ba to complete the whole tutorial if its followed exactly. I think what aught to be done is have the tutorial run before you actually start the actual thing. Then you only allow the options needed to proceed through the tutorial. Then once you finish the tutorial it drops you into the real game and you start out with a brand new char. This is the way a lot of other games have their tutorials.

The tutorial shouldn't be a requirement. And if it is, you shouldn't be able to progress without finishing it. As it is, I don't agree with having to hire a minion if you don't want one. If the reason why it bugs out is because people don't follow it exactly, force them to finish it in exact order before they progress through the game. And please remove certain unreasonable features, like hiring minions. People don't actually have to hire minions to understand how it works; just leading them to the page would be enough. When I was a NUB, I found the tutorial to be quite unsatisfactory.
My opinion is exactly how it always has been regarding this topic: fix it. We need more new players in this community. Make it attractive.

that is exactly what i was thinking. having the tutorial run alongside the game is too much at once methinks.

"The tutorial shouldn't be a requirement."

Agreed... Most NUBs who stick around nowadays seem to know everything from the first day anyways... :P

Though I don't want to get this thread off topic, I can't help but state this. I believe the tutorial can be the best retention tool for new players IF it's stretched out. I know it's tempting to view the tutorial as a perfunctory hassle that should be done in five minutes before the real game starts, but it would be highly beneficial to leave it where it is -- IN the game. Yes, get rid of the required minion-hiring part, but stretch it out. Make it last through a couple of log-ins to keep people coming back.

That being said, I don't think the admins will permit anyone to create a multi... but we do have a lot of younger players, and many of them have siblings...

AdminNemesia [Demonic Serenity] April 3 2009 11:55 AM EDT

It would be really funny if I could get all of my siblings to play cb. I have 7 of them after all. Right now only one is willing to try it out.

As for the tutorial. I think a person is much more effective at helping someone out. One of the biggest problems with the tutorial is that you cannot get chat until after you finish it. There is always the help section as well.
