Read the Wiki, it's the best thing on this game. I read almost all the Strategy Guides, the Basics, The Spells, and the Equipment and it really help me a ton.
I see your using a Heaume, It's one of, if not the worst helmet:
# Base AC : 5
# Negative 4% to DX and Skills
# Negative 6% to Direct Damage Spells (DD) cast by the wearer
# Negative 4.5% to Enchant Offense Spells (EO) cast by the wearer
# Negative 4% to Enchant Defense Spells (ED) cast by the wearer
# Negative 5 to Unarmed Combat (UC) used by the wearer, additional to the Skills penalty
I would replace it with an Armet or Cabasset
