Forum Suggestion (in General)

Wouldnt it be nice to have a quote function?
Instead of having to copy and paste the user and what he/she said or whatever people do. A quote function can solve this easy.
I think we need one. Opinions?

YES!
And the ability to Edit. ;)
It's really needed when debating. Closer to real life debates.

"And the ability to Edit."
NO!
Yes, and like GL said, the ability to edit.
The ability to edit is nice in a casual context, where discussion is light-hearted and friendly.
In a debate, it's like a time-machine, and is unfair. Also, it encourages not thinking about what you post since it can be undone.

Reason I didn't mention an Edit option is because it could be abused. An easy way to scam, go back on what you said, what R mentioned above etc.
I think we should take it one step at a time, and that's why I brought up Quoting.

You could easily have the forum store the version prior to the edit... and have it available in a link. Why do people think that'd be hard?
Burton
June 15 2009 7:21 PM EDT
I never mentioned anything about adding the Edit option to be hard or difficult. I just know it would be an easy way to scam, which ofcourse people would abuse it and it would put more work on the Admins to solve it etc. And what about multiple edits? Somewhere in the 100 range?
I'm just saying, Quoting option is much easier then the Edit and taking steps to getting somewhere is alot easier then jumping and perhaps falling over. If that makes any sense to you.

Some one could just as easily post 100 times and spam the forum. You simply provide a link to them all.
But yes some basic forum functions would be nice. Quoting especially.

Quoting Yes, Editing No...
It would be a lot easier to reply to a post 10 posts back...
But no to editing, not only does it open the door to scamming (or at least attempted scamming and more work for admins), I think not being able to edit makes a person think more about what they post before hitting the button...

Any more inputs? Perhaps an Admin can post as to why this will never get added / why it isn't up yet.

You'd need Jon or NS to make the final call, but I think the response to the quote function (that should be a benign improvement) would just be that they don't want to code 24/7.
Perhaps an 'Edit' option for 30 mins. or so.

Another request (that we'll never see implemented): a list of the last ~15 posts in the thread under the reply box, PHPbb style, instead of just the initial post at the top.

I always found the "pre" tags to work just fine.
As for editing. No thanks.

I know it works fine, but the quoting option shouldn't be too much work adding it onto the forums and it would make a big difference imo.

"I always found the "pre" tags to work just fine."
But then we have to use <br /> tags or <p> tags to make line breaks. No thanks. I'd rather have a quote button.

Indeed, yes, GB, the phone used to "work just fine" too, as did conventional mail...
...but I bet ya use e-mail a great deal. *smile*
LB is so entirely on the mark. Yes, HTML mode helps, but then one has to do all sorts of HTMLey things once in that style. I don't know about you, but I tend to write a lot. LB's comments about <br> _nails_ it.
NOW, that being said, if this functionality would be recreating too much PHPbb functionality, or would cause forums to be less integrated in the CB environment, then I would understand a "no" to it, and would probably agree. The integration is key... Fight some battles, check an auction, visit the blacksmith, make some posts. Unless the "posts" part of that is very much like the rest (themeable, paneable, unobtrusive, etc), then I am not sure it would be worth it.
Quite frankly, the forums (and chat kinda too) have been less-than-slight reinventions of a couple wheels in order to keep things under control and integrated. I have always thought that was "worth it".
FWIW, I would also love a quote function. It wouldn't be terribly hard to do, either. It might be kind of fun.
The drawback is that people quickly become very liberal with their quotings, and threads become.... annoying.

We quote anyway. We just use "quotation marks" at the time, which is hard to read. A button with special formatting will just make it easier to see.
A five-minute edit feature would help to clean up typos and make small addendas without double posting, but I strongly oppose full, unrestricted editing.

Something similar to this would be easy to implement and still be effective:

Maybe instead of posting the entire quote you can allow a link that moves the page to the location of the post it's replying to? Just an idea to reduce clutter.
LB - because of the fact that it's not convenient to quote, it's not a common thing. Quoting can be greatly overused.
WoC - the style can be addressed after we determine how to curb the overused-ness.
Cube - now THAT I kind of like! bugzilla does that, actually.

If you make the actual quote not massive like some forum software and keep it clean, like in a box, different font, then it's fine. On many other forums, I don't think quoting gets too bad.
You could also get it to only quote one post. IE: You quote Jon and I quote you, most forum software will quote you and jon, but make it just quote the last user, IE: You.
If you've only got one post then it shouldn't be too bad, then just add a fine for stupidity (overquoting) like with most of CB.
Could you have a quote function where the default is that the quote box is hidden? Then, you could click on the quote to expand it to full size if you really want to see what's being quoted, while otherwise, you can just treat the thread as normal.

Well, do I figure out if this will get added or not? Or will this suggestion get buried amongst the other topics and become forgotten?

If we keep bumping it, NS seems fairly attracted to the idea :)
Sounds perfect to not have the full text there and then you can click to expand :)

Up - I'd like to hear something regarding this from the Admins.
Good idea, probably not a priority.

I could argue agaisnt that. I would say the forums are what bring users together, much more chatting would go on, making the forums become more used, more communication, more activity, more users, etc etc. Small changes can have big outcomes, and I think this is one of those small changes. :)
Quoting is a convenience, thus I would say its addition, while useful, is not something that is going to revolutionize the way the forums are used.
