Affordable computer system? (in Off-topic)

So as a birthday / graduation present I am going to buy my girlfriend a desktop system. We won't be together while studying for boards and she needs a set up. Being in a loan situation I can't splurge, but was wondering if anyone knew of any sales or good buys out there.

So far I'm looking at a Dell 2.0gig Pentium Dual Core with a 22inch display for just over 600 with free shipping.

We haven't been able to go out much while in clinics and I wanted to do something nice. And I don't want to go too low end like E Machines, etc.

Get an EeePC, a monitor, USB keyboard and Mouse. Maybe some Speakers.
Plug the EeePC into the monitor. Basic Desktop sorted.

What's that? She needs to do something elsewhere? Unplug monitor, keyboard and mouse. Looky! A laptop!

Seriously, though. you can switch between monitor and LCD screen very easily, the built in software handles it all for you.

I got my Eee for roughly $390 US and use it like this in my bedroom as a movie machine. I got one with only 8gig of hard drive space, so I have a USB hard drive for it. The only downside is that it doesn't have a disk drive, but a USB one of those is pretty cheap as well.
