the new server... (in General)
seems quite responsive to me, even with the fight feed on. ; )

Day-um, yeah, I'll see what things are like after the fight feed runs all night!

fight feed slowdown after running for a while is a client-side problem, it's always O(1) on the server.

So we're all set up now? No limbo time between backup and relocation?

Can Fight Feed be turned off? I really don't need it.

Joel: yes, we're all set now.

I like it :)
Thanks!
Wait, so are the changes we make permanent? Because I was under the impression we were still in the gray time.
there was a very small grey time, but it is over now.
Oh... damn.. it... CRAP. >_<

I find that client-side problems are pretty much server-side problems (philosophically, anyway) no matter which way you slice them. That's why add-ons (like the fight feed) are usually optional. Last I checked, I can't fix Firefox all by myself. And no, changing browsers or platforms isn't an option.
Another way of saying that is the old adage -- the customer is always right. But it's entirely possible I missed a meeting and I (as one example) simply am not considered a customer any more? I suppose that can work, too.

Are these new servers an upgrade or downgrade?

How's your responsiveness/speed of CB going? I'd say an upgrade :)
Burton

Yeah, I am much faster too.
But I woulds still like a confirmation from the big man. :)

Jon talked about ordering a new server back in May, dunno if this is the same one he bought, but if so:
http://www.carnageblender.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=002krY
"I ordered a refurbished 2950 with 6x15000 disks for $1900. I'll have to add ram (it comes with 4GB) but that is easy. It's also light on CPU (only a dual core) but it should be roughly equal to the current server's CPU capacity (which doesn't get much over 30% load) so it should be OK at least for the rest of 09.
What sold me is that the previous owner splurged for the hdd controller with 250MB battery-backed cache (I checked, that's a $300 option) which will make disk writes EVEN MORE FASTER HAHAHAHAHA."

Woops, I lied.
Much slower now, must be the Fight Feed lag I get kicking in, woo.
sutekh, i think Jonathan was just trying to say that since the server side of the feed has no problems, then upgrading to the new server won't affect the performance of the fight feed..
a client-side issue can only be resolved with an alteration to the browser scripting or changing the browser (or shared libraries).. but since they don't want to force people to use a specific browser, they have to make their client-side code browser-independent
from what i can remember, every project i was on had a problem with browser-independence and it was always time-consuming and costly.. however, as a better coding practice the first feature that should be implemented for any new plug-in is an on/off switch :)

Couldn't agree with you more, Levon, especially your closing line. It is a very good point to clarify there is no reason for a new server to fix the fight feed issues, so my bringing up of the fight feed was, at the very least, off topic.
I'm going to go through all oif my changesd that were on the old server and not committed tonight. Once that's done, feel free to let me know what I missed.
"I'm going to go through all oif my changesd that were on the old server and not committed tonight. Once that's done, feel free to let me know what I missed."
just to be clear, we are talking about cosmetic and interface type changes as opposed to game mechanics ones?
Has anybody else noticed significantly fewer fight suspensions?
"Has anybody else noticed significantly fewer fight suspensions?"
i have never had many in the first place, but with the improved response time from the server i can only see it as helping.
btw, i feel really close to our server now that it is in texas with me! woohoo. ; )

There is like 5 or 6 of us in Texas... KitKat and I are in West Texas, in the Midland/Odessa area.
Hey I am in Texas too! =D

From his IP, I'm guessing dudemus is about 75 miles NW of San Antonio. Am I close?
pretty darn close!
i have friends i talk with on vent every night in the dallas area though.
oddly enough, i used to live in midland before moving here! ; )
Hey Jon do you mind updating the dictionary, it lost a few words during the migration.
It appears nfc-old/nfc.tcl no longer exists
