the new server... (in General)

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] October 11 2009 9:53 PM EDT

seems quite responsive to me, even with the fight feed on. ; )

Lilligant October 11 2009 9:56 PM EDT

New Server! =]] I'm moving around much faster myself!

HAIL HAIL. ^^

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] October 11 2009 9:58 PM EDT

the user & clan stats page had been getting pretty reluctant for the past year or so. it now comes up almost immediately, woot!

QBsutekh137 October 11 2009 10:00 PM EDT

Day-um, yeah, I'll see what things are like after the fight feed runs all night!

Lord Bob October 11 2009 10:01 PM EDT

Very nice so far! It's running fast and smooth.

BootyGod October 11 2009 10:15 PM EDT

So fast.... *drool*

AdminJonathan October 11 2009 10:24 PM EDT

fight feed slowdown after running for a while is a client-side problem, it's always O(1) on the server.

Joel October 11 2009 10:26 PM EDT

So we're all set up now? No limbo time between backup and relocation?

Kompton Kidd October 11 2009 10:26 PM EDT

Can Fight Feed be turned off? I really don't need it.

AdminJonathan October 11 2009 10:29 PM EDT

Joel: yes, we're all set now.

[P]Mitt October 11 2009 10:29 PM EDT

I like it :)

Thanks!

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] October 11 2009 10:31 PM EDT

Wait, so are the changes we make permanent? Because I was under the impression we were still in the gray time.

AdminNemesia [Demonic Serenity] October 11 2009 10:32 PM EDT

there was a very small grey time, but it is over now.

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] October 11 2009 10:33 PM EDT

Oh... damn.. it... CRAP. >_<

Joel October 11 2009 10:40 PM EDT

Awesome! Now I will blend the carnage!
Thanks Jon!!

QBsutekh137 October 11 2009 11:41 PM EDT

I find that client-side problems are pretty much server-side problems (philosophically, anyway) no matter which way you slice them. That's why add-ons (like the fight feed) are usually optional. Last I checked, I can't fix Firefox all by myself. And no, changing browsers or platforms isn't an option.

Another way of saying that is the old adage -- the customer is always right. But it's entirely possible I missed a meeting and I (as one example) simply am not considered a customer any more? I suppose that can work, too.

kevlar October 11 2009 11:44 PM EDT

Thanks Jon, seems silky smooth so far :)

Burton October 11 2009 11:59 PM EDT

Are these new servers an upgrade or downgrade?

[P]Mitt October 12 2009 12:35 AM EDT

How's your responsiveness/speed of CB going? I'd say an upgrade :)

Burton October 12 2009 12:44 AM EDT

Yeah, I am much faster too.
But I woulds still like a confirmation from the big man. :)

kevlar October 12 2009 1:31 AM EDT

Jon talked about ordering a new server back in May, dunno if this is the same one he bought, but if so:

http://www.carnageblender.com/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg.tcl?msg_id=002krY

"I ordered a refurbished 2950 with 6x15000 disks for $1900. I'll have to add ram (it comes with 4GB) but that is easy. It's also light on CPU (only a dual core) but it should be roughly equal to the current server's CPU capacity (which doesn't get much over 30% load) so it should be OK at least for the rest of 09.

What sold me is that the previous owner splurged for the hdd controller with 250MB battery-backed cache (I checked, that's a $300 option) which will make disk writes EVEN MORE FASTER HAHAHAHAHA."

{WW]Nayab [Cult of the Valaraukar] October 12 2009 2:21 AM EDT

Thanks John!

Admiralkiller [Cult of the Valaraukar] October 12 2009 2:36 AM EDT

Yay for all of us!

Burton October 12 2009 6:04 AM EDT

Woops, I lied.
Much slower now, must be the Fight Feed lag I get kicking in, woo.

Levon [Clocked Out] October 12 2009 10:41 AM EDT

sutekh, i think Jonathan was just trying to say that since the server side of the feed has no problems, then upgrading to the new server won't affect the performance of the fight feed..

a client-side issue can only be resolved with an alteration to the browser scripting or changing the browser (or shared libraries).. but since they don't want to force people to use a specific browser, they have to make their client-side code browser-independent

from what i can remember, every project i was on had a problem with browser-independence and it was always time-consuming and costly.. however, as a better coding practice the first feature that should be implemented for any new plug-in is an on/off switch :)

QBsutekh137 October 12 2009 10:52 AM EDT

Couldn't agree with you more, Levon, especially your closing line. It is a very good point to clarify there is no reason for a new server to fix the fight feed issues, so my bringing up of the fight feed was, at the very least, off topic.

AdminNightStrike October 12 2009 10:58 AM EDT

I'm going to go through all oif my changesd that were on the old server and not committed tonight. Once that's done, feel free to let me know what I missed.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] October 12 2009 11:19 AM EDT

"I'm going to go through all oif my changesd that were on the old server and not committed tonight. Once that's done, feel free to let me know what I missed."

just to be clear, we are talking about cosmetic and interface type changes as opposed to game mechanics ones?

iBananco [Blue Army] October 12 2009 11:29 AM EDT

Has anybody else noticed significantly fewer fight suspensions?

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] October 12 2009 11:30 AM EDT

"Has anybody else noticed significantly fewer fight suspensions?"

i have never had many in the first place, but with the improved response time from the server i can only see it as helping.

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] October 12 2009 12:38 PM EDT

btw, i feel really close to our server now that it is in texas with me! woohoo. ; )

AdminJonathan October 12 2009 9:08 PM EDT

where are you in TX, dudemus?

AdminTal Destra October 12 2009 9:10 PM EDT

There is like 5 or 6 of us in Texas... KitKat and I are in West Texas, in the Midland/Odessa area.

Eliteofdelete [Battle Royale] October 12 2009 9:13 PM EDT

Hey I am in Texas too! =D

Demigod October 12 2009 9:13 PM EDT

From his IP, I'm guessing dudemus is about 75 miles NW of San Antonio. Am I close?

Admindudemus [jabberwocky] October 12 2009 9:24 PM EDT

pretty darn close!

i have friends i talk with on vent every night in the dallas area though.

oddly enough, i used to live in midland before moving here! ; )

Brakke Bres [Ow man] October 12 2009 10:09 PM EDT

Hey Jon do you mind updating the dictionary, it lost a few words during the migration.

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] October 14 2009 2:12 PM EDT

It appears nfc-old/nfc.tcl no longer exists
