I was looking for a forger for my SoD (and yes, I already have a FS/WTB thread). I looked through the last umpteen Services threads and I reckon that most of the forging has been on SoDs.
Is it just a coincidence that everyone is getting their SoD upped at the same time? I don't think so. The SoD is such a versatile ranged weapon:
- You don't need to train DX with the SoD as long as the opponent has a low DX lead minion (read: Wall)
- You don't need a huge ST if you are already casting a large DM and you only want to eliminate the 20 HP enchanters
- You don't need to train a skill to use it
- The damage is certainly nothing to sneeze at and it doesn't become useless in melee if you want to use it there
So, why is this not an OP rant? Because I don't think it needs to be nerfed. Instead, I think that it's a great part of the game, and gives a very feasible alternative to the Xbows.
It does, however, make it tough to insta up my smallish SoD a couple of mill ...

Why is it a alternative to xbows?
You still need strength to do damage with it.
I agree thought, it is the best ranged weapon in the game for overall use.
As you stated, no skill is needed which saves tons of xp that could be used for dex or evasion.

And DM is not needed for archers????
C'mon now.
We need the dictionary please.
Well before damage reduction I would say; "No archers are not obligated to train it."
After the damage reduction I would say; "Archers are not obligated to train it, but GA does pack a bunch so I would advise it."
And to answer your question; Not as much as Archery is for archers.

I see no difference in using DM for a SoD vs ELB user.
If you think it is more essential for a SoD user, do you think the SoD therefore does more damage and is a better weapon?
I think for all bows and the SoD you need to train DM, heavily or GA will eat you up.
But the ELB requires the extra added bonus of having to use the skill slot AND spend the xp to be able just to use it properly. Unlike any other weapon in the game.
Yes, the SoD is better overall.

And no,
I do not think the SoD is "over"powered.
Just a very good weapon with pluses and minuses. More of the former and less of the latter vs the ELB.
"If you think it is more essential for a SoD user, do you think the SoD therefore does more damage and is a better weapon?"
When the damage reduction wasn't introduced yet the spread damage it did, didn't "overpower" GA. This means full, 60%, damage deflection back to the SoD user. The ELB could easily overpower it and GA, in response, only gave pitiful damage back.
I could remember a post that the SoD does more damage then an ELB due to spread damage when it involved 3 minions or more. But I still tend to agree with most ELB users is that the ELB is the better weapon.

"The ELB could easily overpower it"
I wish my x25k elb could overpower the GA's I face.
Sadly that is far from the truth. I take over 52% from GA due to the AC I have.
Most GA heavy characters have more than enough GA for my character.
Ranger, I put in the comment about it being a feasible alternative to crossbows because the crossbows are solely antitank, while the SoD is the more all-round option.

AH,
I thought you meant a good counter to the exbow.
I agree, the SoD is the best all around missile weapon.
