As of right now: Rough progress meter: 28.746%
As of yesterday: Rough progress meter: 51.547%
working on the same item, which has the same NW now as it did then.
can anybody tell me what caused this?
NW doesn't go up until the upgrade is complete.

If you forge it really badly, the rpm is sometimes cut in half by the dwarf.
There was a really high profile case of that back in cb1, when Mushu accidentally cut in half a forge job for Todd, which had taken a very long time to get it to where it was at the time. I forgot what happened after that...

nh, the Dwarf doesn't cut your RPM, he just steps in when you mess something up, says "That's not how you forge a [weapon or armor here]" and then plunges it into water then makes you start the cycle over. But if you overheat it, the blacksmith will step in and say "That's no way to treat a [weapon or armor here]!" before tossing the nearly-molten piece of equipment across the room (much better treatment?), and you lose half your progress.

and by overheat, I think you need to heat for somewhere in the neighborhood of 150-200% of the recommended heating time (if it's glowing white, you have a problem). Only reason I could ever see for someone doing this would be if they were to log out after heating but before viciousness/accuracy/hardness, then they log in later and forget they were in the middle and start the cycle from the beginning with a new set of heat.

At least your upgrade is relatively small. Imagine if I did that now with my TGs... I'd lose over 10M worth of forging.
I have done that before. It hurts.
