What Exactly does AP Do?? (in General)

Wiki is kinda sparse on detail, and I am seeing more and more people with it. (Or maybe just noticing more and more)
Can anyone explain (preferably in words of one syllable) just what it does? Maybe with examples?

AP simply reduces the penalities a minion gets from armors... It takes half of it away so a minion with an Adamantite Cuirass would have a penality of 4% instead of 8%...

Does not need to be trained higher than base so it is a very good option to add whenever your minion does not need any other skill and/or needs to wear big penality gears.

It also reduces SG damage. SG does an extra 1% damage for every point of armor you have, and AP drops that in half

You left out it reduces SG bonus damage by 50%.
