Theory: Ferris Bueller's Day Off was entirely set in Cameron's head.
Kudos to IA for inspiring me.

Stated in chat Ed Rooney could not be explained away. How wrong I was.
InebriatedArsonist< Perhaps Cameron hated Rooney for continually being a pain about absences.
InebriatedArsonist< Still, Cameron was probably out of school with imagined illnesses, so Rooney would probably have been on him for it.

This view could be compounded by Grace the oddball secretary and Ben Stein as the paramount of boring teachers.

If someone can explain why Frye was holding hands with Sloane at the parade would be much appreciated.

But according to that link, the whole thing where Ferris ran around was all in Cameron's head, then it didn't really happen, then Cameron didn't really hold Sloane's hand. If it was all in his head why wouldn't he have imagined himself in the entire scenario (like him holding her hand) instead of letting Bueller have all of the fun? So thus we have an inconsistency, I think.

The theory goes that Cameron needed someone to pull him out of his self-induced funk, so he imagined a friend who had with the confidence necessary to go out and do everything that he wanted to do. Ferris has lots of friends and supporters, a decent family, style, self-confidence and an attractive girlfriend, all of which Cameron probably lacks.

As to Cameron holding hands with Sloane, I would say that was simply a fulfillment of Cameron's desire for human contact.
