Changing active characters (in General)

Just went to switch my active character in my clan to a larger one, and it didn't allow it due to PR cap. The only reason I was over the cap though was because the system tries adding in the new character before taking out the old. Proof of it is that leaving the clan entirely made enough room for my larger char to join the clan, and still get a 5% bonus to our raw clan score (meaning a healthy little chunk of cap room left over.) Is there any way that it could be reversed?
