I always used AVG... some don't like it but I do. Plus you can get a free version.
If you are talking about an anti-virus program then I would go with Avast.
Avira/AVG/Avast it doesn't matter the A's are all good. However, along with those I would recommend installing SuperAntiSpyware2009 and MalwareBytes Anti-Malware.
Your ISP probably gives you a good commercial one for free.
it's just superantispyware... no 2009
In addition to those suggestions I'll repeat what I said in chat. Check out the forums at bleepingcomputer.com, in particular the explanations of how to run combofix. It's the main utility I'm using to clean out the fake antivirus stuff that is so rampant at the moment.

Thanks to all
i love yous
I would not recommend AVG. It is slows down your system way to much and it has been known to let too much through.
Avira has worked very well for me and I log in through all the worse places since I travel for business so much. Avira like AVG is also free, but appears to work much better.
microsoft security essentials seems like a solid choice in the freeware category these days. i have placed it on about 100 customers computers with no issues so far.
