You need to have Steam running to play games acquired on Steam. They're tied to your account, but you can install them on as many computers as you want, as long as you're only logged onto one at a time.

Steam has an offline mode, not sure how long you can play without logging in, I think it's like a month; either that or indefinitely. So I play some of my friend's games no problem with him over LAN.

I used to play in offline mode almost exclusively, other than the nag on startup, I don't think it ever forces you to connect. *shrug*

Is it just me, or is this game very laggy? My computer plays Counter Strike Source with no lag whatsoever, this, however, I'm having a hard time getting my mouse to move fast enough cuz of the lag, =(

I like this being free, especially as I already own it on 360, but it is not laggy on my 360, makes me not want to play it on here, lol.

What video card do you have? I played Portal just fine with an old nVidia 5400 PCI standard, and I even played it in 1680x1050 mode (or whatever the closest is for that game).

I can't imagine why you're lagging. The card is plenty fine, and even if the engine is CPU-heavy, the processor doesn't have weak cores.

And no, I played the original Orange Box version, but it's the same engine and graphics. The only updates should be for stability.

Yea, that's why Im wondering why it's slow, the first 2-3 levels are perfect, but once I get to the later levels, it's downright laggy. I have a feeling this free version is not the same as the retail version. I hope this doesn't put people off from buying the second one, cuz it was a great game, short, but great. I beat it on my buddies xbox, but still need to beat mine on the 360, lol.
