Can they be abandoned and another one started whenever you want or do you have to finish out the 6 month period?

Yes they can be abandoned. Just hit the retire button save up 1600 and start another. :)

I think you have to retire the old one first. I don't think the wait until the bonus time ends has applied for a while.
