Uncharted Waters Online! (in Off-topic)

So growing up, one of my favorite games of all time was Uncharted Waters: New Horizons on Sega Genesis. It was/is a great game that is completely open with 6 main story arcs and complete control over how to explore/conquer/trade on the high seas.

Well the other day I actually find a copy for SNES, throw down $60 (a little high but I'm a sucker), and relive the best game of all time. I look it up one day online, and low and behold! Koei, the maker of said game, is still around in Japan! And they honestly only just this week released a free MMO sailing game! Uncharted Waters Online, which has been Japan only for years, is just now being released in the US!

I've only just started playing it, but it looks encouraging. The graphics are a bit behind the times, but going sailing looks and feels awesome. The tutorial/school beginning is just as slow and tedious as regular school, but I think I'm just about out of that and onto the high seas!

To get to the point, if you like games where you explore, trade, fight pirates, manage a ship, and have lots of strategy, give it a try! It would be great to have some other people to sail with! Take a look at: http://global.netmarble.com/uwo/ if you are interested.

The trailer looked amazing. I'll give it a try, hopefully it works on my computer.. *crosses fingers*.

Emulator + ROM = $60 still in pocket

I've tried the original on emulators. For some reason it's just not the same. I miss the living room experience with the console and controllers and big tv. And in the larger scheme of things, that's not that much money to have lost to claim that I finally own the best game of all time.

Anyone interested/trying it yet? Just fyi, it's completely free to play and like other games such as S&F you can use USD to buy items that speed up your ships and leveling. I have no problem running it at all, and my computer freezes half the time playing WoW.

And if anyone else is interested, we could get a CB corporation going on there. Only limiter is I think it costs around $1mill, so that could take a while.

I wanted to give it a shot, but the download estimated time said it would of taken like 3 hours. Which was just to long for my liking :/..

I tried it, but it seems quite slow, with no definite goal in sight.

I started as a trader, and went through an hour of running around doing "school lectures". After that, I just started to explore/run exports from city to city.

I was turned off by the cycle of Run goods around -> Profit -> By better ship/cannons -> Run goods around. Is there anything fun to do in the later segments of the game?

The fun part of trading is just trying to make money and upgrade everything. Much like you build up a team on CB, you level and train your skills and acquire new ships and equipment. There does seem to be a story somewhere in the background, but it seems easy to miss and not at all important to the game. It's free roaming do what you want gameplay at its best. However, there can be a lot of sailing involved and let's face it, it takes time to sail around the world.

Plus you can do one of the other two routes if you want more excitement. If trading is boring they also have an adventurer route and a pirate/fighter route.

I loved the snes version but this one is horrible.

First couple of hours are spent running around the first town doing a tutorial, with most of the time spent running around.

E.g. pick a class, then go to academy and get quest, then walk outside and talk to a npc, next go to the bar and talk to a npc, read dialog, go back to academy to collect quest reward. Yup you guessed it, the XP reward is low. Repeat this for 1-2 hours

Grats your lvl 5 now you can decide to go out to sea or continue with a different tutorial about another class.......

Yay first time at sea.... The controls are the worst I have ever experienced ever....EVER!!!! Click a spot and your boat will go in that direction. Click another spot and your boat will continue going in the direction you originally clicked.... it doesn't change directions...

Start using your arrow keys... a icon pops up with a wheel turning in the direction of the arrow key your holding down... still doesnt change the direction of the boat....5-10 seconds later your boat turns..... to much so you try to straighten it by holding down the opposite arrow key.... icon shows the wheel turning but boat continues turning in the original direction...

You click Alt F4 and uninstall.

A pirate/trade themed MMO would be just the thing to put the wind back in my sails.

as far as the steering goes it reflects what happens in a real boat - I know when being a novice steering a river boat things dont happen immediately and its easy to overcompensate.
