Why negatives? (in General)

Hit Points -1,804,507 -1,580,652 674,568 3,207,381 543,667

Why do we go into the negatives by so much? I can understand one hit taking you to the negatives from a positive, but why not change targeting the very next hit? I mean if you die in combat you fall over making the guy behind you a juicy target.

its all about targeting per round.

Are we talking about changing target during multiple hits from 1 attacker?
I assume retargeting during same round for 1 attacker takes too long.
That's how most rpgs i know work. some have skills to allow retarget or implement overkill damage.
