Would someone please explain why we use an "A" instead of an "An" in this circumstance?
I was taught that nouns commencing with an "H" followed by a vowel are preceded by "an," would this not be the case?
I could be wrong but I believe you are referring to a silent H. It would be a helm vs an hour. The h is silent in hour. Words that start with h and are silent use an.
its predicated on the sound the start of the word makes. if it makes a vowel sound you use an. helm uses an h sound
Then it's geographically dependent. This has been enlightening.
