Once upon a time, there was a hatchet-wielding lunatic who insisted that ridiculous AC was the route to the promised land. While many agreed that a wall minion was certainly helpful, it was pretty much unanimous that putting that much armor on a damage dealer was a waste of the newly-added encumbrance limit. Damage was king, and the days of the todd-spydah heavy tank were gone with CB1's demise. But our maniacal protagonist persisted. Freed built a 478 AC set, but insisted it was completely impractical to fit a proper weapon onto a character so heavily-armored, and good luck trying to cast a spell through those penalties! It would take "an absolute madman" to even TRY to make a heavy tank viable... novice and DracO were the only ones who supported the idea, at the time, and I think they were just being supportive of me having fun with my silly idea rather than believing the idea would succeed.
In my mind, the idea worked. But it was gonna take some prep for sure. Spent a couple years building up an armor set second only to Freed's bottomless blacksmith budget, and like another year buying and paying off a massive VB from Ranger. All that was left was the save for a couple more years to afford an NCB run and to purchase my minions.
Then Ranger quit, and gave me his character, which was among the top MPR, and had the ideal XP distribution for my plans. Retrained the character and built the heavy tank of my dreams. Quickly took over #1 (should i say re-took? cuz Ranger was #1 with the char before me, but he had an archer setup with a small enchanter), as the best any team could hope for was a 50-round stalemate, and there were only 2-3 built sturdy enough to manage that feat. After a few weeks, having accomplished everything I ever wanted in CB, it became boring. CB hadn't died yet, but Bast was no longer in chat correcting grammar, Ranger wasn't in forums to argue with, and things were feeling stale. Burning BA out of habit without any purpose. So I logged off for a month. Came back, was still #1. Played a couple days, then logged off for a couple months. Then novice contacted me cuz apparently Ranger had come back, was upset I wasn't using the character he gave me (which was a fair complaint. He could have made some cash selling it to someone else), and Nightstrike gave it back to him (with all my gear I had spent years building). Logged in just to check on things, the character was still unbeatable by any of the meta strategies of the time.
Now, nearly 20 years later, I notice my facebook page still has a carnageblender link in it, so I click it out of curiosity, expecting a 404. To my surprise, the server is still up (kudos, Nightstrike!), and a few people are even actively playing. Cool to see it. Figure I'll burn some BA for old-time's sake. Created the NUB when I saw the post. Then got curious about the "new meta" (like there's been a changelog since I played :p), and what do I find? a VB-wielding heavy tank competing with a heavy-armor mage for the top spot...
They said tesla and DaVinci were mad as well... But sometimes, some people just see a little further ahead than others. If only I can get that to translate into my chess games. Started playing chess a year ago, and I still can't beat either of the NMs at my local chess club :(
