Official statement on chat activity (in General)

AdminJonathan January 6 2005 9:50 AM EST

This goes for both public rooms (carnage and new players):

Descent January 6 2005 12:25 PM EST

Jon, my only question would be about rare ammo bundles. While there isn't much of a market for them at this time, the best way to sell ammo (quickly) has been to post them in chat and have players bid against each other for them. I don't know how others feel about this, but I've always found it rather entertaining, both on the selling and buying side.

Timberwolf January 6 2005 12:29 PM EST

Descent, the in chat auctions, especially on hot bundles of ammo cause just as much spam as that person advertising the bundle over and over.

I think the first line of Jonathan's post says it all:
If you are selling something that can be auctioned, don't advertise it in chat.

Descent January 6 2005 12:32 PM EST

Timberwolf, I have not checked, but unless the limit on auction requirements has been dropped, small bundles of ammo cannot be sold in there. Therefore, they are not sellable in auctions.

Descent January 6 2005 12:49 PM EST

That said, I do realize that ammo auctions suck up a lot of chat space, and would have no objection to them not being allowed. I'm just looking for clarification on the matter as this is the way it has always been done. Besides, there really isn't much of a market for it at this time, so its no big deal.

AdminShade January 6 2005 12:50 PM EST

Spamming those bundles of ammo will still be kickable then. problem solved.

AdminJonathan January 6 2005 1:20 PM EST

I was aware that rare ammo is auctionable when I wrote the above. :)

Descent January 6 2005 1:30 PM EST

Duly noted, thanks for the clarification.

AdminShade January 6 2005 3:08 PM EST

Though rare ammo below 5K NW is not auctionable those stacks could be sold in chat.

other side of it would be to save them up and merge the stacks...

AdminJonathan January 6 2005 3:12 PM EST

Okay, for those truly pedantic minds out there: if the item type is auctionable, but your specific item is too low-value to qualify, it doesn't belong in chat either!

AdminLamuness January 6 2005 3:28 PM EST

Jon,

Is there also any guidelines on about saying what's in the store? Players seem to do it all the time, and that gets annoying as well. Plus, most often than not, the said item is usually gone by the time you get there.

(CB1)WFP January 6 2005 3:30 PM EST

ok this may be a stupid question but what about selling cb$?

Timberwolf January 6 2005 3:31 PM EST

The store statements can be dealt with when they become spam.
The CBD$ for sale posts belong in FS/WTB froum.

Descent January 6 2005 3:41 PM EST

As there is no sellable item in this game that cannot be put into auctions, this essentially means that chat commerce is dead. I guess we have definitive word on that now.

private January 6 2005 10:44 PM EST

As Jon just said non-auctionable stuff can be said in chat, cb$ sales can be in chat.

As for chat commerce being dead, you can still sell junk, loan out tats for free, forge (no soliciting for forgers in NP, though), etc.

AdminJonathan January 6 2005 10:59 PM EST

As above:
  • Looking for forge work or looking for a forger belongs in the Forging Services forum, not in chat.
  • {CB1}Sparticus [Screwed Justice] January 7 2005 6:01 AM EST

So, from what i understand Jon, You can post "PM me if you would like to loan my Tattoo Blah Blah..." without constantly spamming it and it's ok. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

    AdminJonathan January 7 2005 9:09 AM EST

    correct

    [EG]Stump January 7 2005 10:11 AM EST

I would like to add, and Jon may disagree, but I think popping into a room, advertising a tattoo trade with a request to reply in PM, and popping out, is spamming chat.

    AdminJonathan January 7 2005 10:13 AM EST

    I agree.

    private January 7 2005 6:23 PM EST

If you are selling something that can be auctioned, don't advertise it in chat.

Does this apply to buying something in chat as well?

The Tyrantly Tamale January 7 2005 8:45 PM EST

Gee, there should almost be another room called 'commerce' or 'market' or something now...

    Night January 7 2005 8:47 PM EST

There is a room called market already - just not enough people join. I usually Idle in there so nobody gets op status and decides to kick the few people that do join.

    [GR8]{KREEFT}The Chemist January 7 2005 8:51 PM EST

    Sometimes I wonder.

Is chat made to follow the rules or are the rules made to follow chat.
Most of you know the rules of CB1-chat as they played CB1, I think that you are safe when following the rules that applied there,
please don't make Jonathan remove chat.

    [LB]Iceman January 10 2005 2:48 AM EST

OK i sincerely apologize for this, but I am getting mixed signals and I would like a clear answer instead of either stepping on toes or arguing with ops. According to bullet three my advertisement "Selling $CB (1 or 2) for neopoints -- pm me" should be just fine in chat, as long as I don't do it repeatedly. Neopoints are not something that can be auctioned, it's very short, and I ask to take bargaining to PM.

So, why are multiple ops telling me that the advert is not allowed and that I should "read Jon's posts in general and changelog"? Someone please clarify this for me?

    private January 11 2005 9:24 PM EST

Good question. Any of those ops want to point to specifics?

Mythicpunk [Mythic Punks] January 11 2005 9:38 PM EST

Well, i've joined "Market" and am the only one there, so i have ops there....

Why not officially sanction a trade/marketplace room, for the obvious purpose?

I'll be in market for a while... couple days, or so, hopefully someone stops by :)

    Max January 12 2005 3:59 PM EST

Players can advertise NeoPoints and CB$ for sale in open channel without being kicked as long as it's not spammed and follow the guidelines above.

    Timberwolf January 27 2005 12:52 AM EST

Would it be possible to have the bulleted points added to the FAQ's somewhere?
