Web Site Hosting (cheap please) (in Off-topic)

Im looking to set up a website and mess around with learning just some of the basics. So, naturally, I want a cool domain name instead of using the webspace offered by my ISP. I mean who wants a website address like

http://myhomeisp.com/myawesomename/mywebpage.html ? No one. We all want cool ones like Spydah.com, and the like :)

I did a google search for website hostings, and came up with about a bazillion hits. I don't even know what questions to ask to find out which one I should go with, so I will outline my basic needs:

1. Cheap
2. Inexpensive
3. Not Costly
4. Decent web space
5. No annoying ads, or whatever
6. Dirt Cheap

I'm a complete n00b with stuff like this, but if I get a domain, I will prob end up paying about $25 a year for it, right? Some places offer web hosting for free, but its only 100Meg of space, and might those come with popups, or ads?

Sorry for the n00b questions, so please don't flame me for asking, but I knew I could come here and get some good answers or suggestions.

Try GoDaddy.com, I was impressed by their Super Bowl Ad. They have cheap domain registration and hosting I believe.

you can get domain names for well under $25 these days... I use gandi.net for everything since they don't try to be sneaky with their contract (no "we really own the domain name but you can borrow it" crap) and they give you full dns control (not just a simplified web interface). Gandi is about $12/yr; I know cut-rate types offer them for $7 or lower.

As for cheap webhosting itself, CB uses www.ion-web.com for its static images. Their cheapest plan is $3/m. Again you can probably find cheaper but your site won't disappear without warning on ion-web. :)

If you don't care about custom dns etc godaddy does look like a pretty good deal.

I've used midphase.com for both personal and work websites before. They include one domain name free in their package.
