Possible Quest Idea (in General)

BrandonLP April 4 2005 1:05 AM EDT

---Summary

Allow all players the chance to acquire a rare or semi-rare item without camping or forking over a ton of money.

---Preamble

While I realize Jon is fine and may even like the idea of campers, I feel as if regular players should have a chance at nabbing a fairly good item. Heck, we could even use it to reintroduce items that don't spawn in the store if there seems to be a substantial lack or huge demand.

---How it works

Every week (or every two weeks, once a month, once every two months, etc., whatever works best) there is a quest released. This would be in the form of a poll. There would be a storyline provided at the beginning and you would choose which path/action you wanted to take. There would be several wrong answers and one correct one. Now, some of you may ask, "How are we to know the right answer from the wrong ones?" By paying attention to the storyline, you're given just a little insight as to what the correct answer might be. It shouldn't be obvious, but the correct answer should be embedded somewhere within. The next day, a poll would appear for those who got the answer right and they'd be able to continue the quest and so forth. This could go on for any number of days. At the end, three (or maybe even one or two) random players who completed the entire quest successfully would receive an item.

Any questions, ideas, or suggestions?

Q: Why not add computer-controlled opponents, or maybe a 'quest' mode?

A: Computer opponents would add zero gameplay and are fundamentally less interesting than competition with people who are (hopefully) as smart as you are.

If you think for just a few minutes about the kinds of quests traditional or massively multiplayer RPGs have, you will realize that they are either (a) ridiculously ill-suited to the CB environment, or (b) something that a CB player in quest of wealth/power/fame would be doing anyway. Or both.

salt3d, if you would take a second to read what I wrote rather than hammering back with a standard retort for all quests, you might see that it's not "standard."

BrandonLP April 4 2005 1:14 AM EDT

I'm not even asking for it to be implemented. I'm just seeing the general response to it. It's not a "mode." It's not anything beyond Jon's programming skill. It just gives regular players a small chance every now and then to potentially pick up something nice.

I like the idea. Most any positive game-play addition is worth considering, at the very least.

Chargerz-Back April 4 2005 1:30 AM EDT

i love the idea and think it would add greatly to the excitement of logging on to CB.

RIPsalt3d April 4 2005 1:32 AM EDT

I took several seconds to read it. Nothing about it suggested to me that it was different from the FORS I'd read. I don't mind being more specific about your version of this RS, though.

Your proposed system isn't much more than a free lottery. Very few people would decline the opportunity to win an item for very little time investment, so you would have a high participation rate. No matter how 'difficult' you make it, a lot of people will get to the end, leaving it to chance as to who gets the item.

Given that CB has a focus on choice, what must you sacrifice for this lottery? If it cost 100 BA every time you answered a poll question, would you be willing to spend several hundred BA for a one in a thousand chance at an item?

BrandonLP April 4 2005 1:37 AM EDT

After five or so days of answering a poll correctly, you think a lot of people are going to be left? I surely don't.

And I would expect participation would be high. That's the point of having a game. From what you're saying, why should Jon allow battles since that gives away free money?

Or maybe each path that you go and say you get one answer a little wrong, that makes the ending item one less better of an item than the main item if you get all answers correct. say, (10/10 answers right - you get a ELB).........(9/10 answers right - you get an axbow) probably not items that would be included but you get my point...lol.

Chargerz-Back April 4 2005 1:51 AM EDT

you consider a axbow one step down from a ELB? you have problems!

go to CB1. we like to call them tournaments. :)

and judging by the tourney mode in manage character jon plans to bring them here again some day.

I don't think it's a bad idea, in fact I like it, but I don't see it getting implemented anytime soon.

Sounds like a different angle on the Black Market to me, not an awful lot of difference...

Grant April 5 2005 12:28 PM EDT

Ah, the allure of getting items for nothing.

The salt3d interchange is just killing me:

BrandonLP: I have a great idea!
Salt3d: It's on the FORS list.
BrandonLP: But the FORS list doesn't mention *my* specific mechanics.
Salt3d: Very well, your specific mechanics are gambling [which Jon hates].
BrandonLP: You are nonspecificly wrong!

No, Salt3d is right. You'll see CB2 poker tournaments first.

BrandonLP April 5 2005 12:42 PM EDT

I never said I'd see this implemented. Improve your comprehension skills a bit more: Read the title. "Possible." "Idea." And instead of potentially helping the idea get to the point where it could be implemented, you'd rather look like you're hardcore for studying Jon. Grats.

AngryZac April 5 2005 1:00 PM EDT

If you don't see it getting implimented why do you get so mad when people tell you it won't be, and procede to tell you why it won't? On a side note, all players have the same chance at snagging a rare in the stores, it's just that people farming the store tend to grab them more often seeing as how that's all they are looking for, and they check the store so much more often.

BrandonLP April 5 2005 1:06 PM EDT

I'm not mad by any stretch of the imagination. I get a bit baffled as to why I get some of the most ridiculous answers imaginable, but I'm far from mad. It's stupid for me get answers like a C&P of FORS without any justification. If people offer criticism, it should be somewhat constructive. It's not like I asked Jon to give everyone in the game a BoNE. I was offering a suggestion to help those non-campers. Honestly, campers will always win against me since as a single mage there's no reason for me to enter the store unless I want to waste BA.

deifeln April 5 2005 2:46 PM EDT

It is not stupid for you to get a response of FORS...what you suggested is in the FORS section of FAQS.
