Too many botchecks? (in General)

{cb1}Linguala April 4 2005 8:01 AM EDT

I had 8 or so botchecks while forging my katana, which is a cycle of bout 25 ba. For non-forgers I might sound crazy or whatever, but other forgers who have had this kind of frequency will certainly agree with me when I say that 8 botchecks in 25 ba is insane(and i have to really hold myself not to break PG rules).
If not lowering total frequency, at least lower the frequency of botchecks appearing during forging so that no more than 1 check has to filled every 10-15 ba or something.
This I had to spill cause them botchecks are really killing this game.

webjunkie April 4 2005 8:37 AM EDT

not only do they kill this game they create a discrimination against the people who do not have good vision I had a referral who due to vision impairment could not play this game

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] April 4 2005 8:48 AM EDT

Botchecks don't take 10 seconds to complete, and I rarely fail the first one. I haven't failed a pair for months. (unless distracted by RL)

The alternative is far worse than having to spend those second per check.

webjunkie April 4 2005 9:07 AM EDT

thats great GentlemanLoser I will build a game called botcheck master you can be the top player in the game :P

Nightmare [NewNightmares] April 4 2005 9:19 AM EDT

dude, there are about a thousand active players. There might be 5 who have a hard time with the botchecks regularly. While I understand that some people can't read them (as I can't most times.. I need to take my glasses off and stick my face on the screen, and I'll still fail the pair on occasion), but its also the best way Jon's come up with to prevent botters... but I do agree with Ling. Thats an insane amount of checks for that little ba.

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] April 4 2005 9:57 AM EDT

;) Webjunkie, if it's a RPG, I might just play it! But;

"not only do they kill this game"

Kill? How? Add a minute onto my BA burning time? All for the price of not having someone whomp everyone by setting up a nice little program at home to play 24/7. Not that would kill the game.

Might just as well go play progress quest...

"they create a discrimination against the people who do not have good vision"

In just the same way small print non braile books do I suppose...

Not = Now...

Gentleman, I understand your point of view. And if you read my first post carefully, I don't suggest eliminating botchecks.
But 8 botchecks in 25 ba time is abnormal and we all know when forging, 25 ba is as good as gone in a wink.
Aside of that, I've had times that there was not a single botcheck during an entire cycle of 25+ ba.
All I'm saying is that the randomness is put down so 8 botchecks don't happen in 25 ba time.
Fine, we need them to keep this game in order, but at 8 checks in 25 ba, it means that in 32% of all ba spendings, botchecks happen.
You come and tell me that in 1000ba you won't go nuts for filling in 320 checks. And especially if 10 of them happen in the last 30 ba.
Well, if you like overkills, be my guest.
But I find 5-10% at all times(evenly spread out) more than enough.

For those who can't remember the first word before finishing the last, little recapitulation:

1) 5-10% botchecks evenly spread out
2) NOT 0% botchecks for 100 ba and then 50% botchecks for 40 ba

Simple as that.

I find that I get more botchecks the faster I fight or forge. If I slow down I get fewer bot checks. I don't know is this if only perceived on my part or really actually in the code though.

Maelstrom April 4 2005 12:48 PM EDT

"in 1000ba you won't go nuts for filling in 320 checks"

I absolutely agree with you. Luckily, due to the nature of randomization, this could never happen. 8 bot checks in 25 was just a random fluke, don't worry about it.

maulaxe April 4 2005 10:41 PM EDT

thats the problem with randomness- you never can tell...

I think there ARE too many. Forging is a very difficult process, heating an item to, say 86 minutes, can be a real pain when you get a bot check at 50, 80, and 86.... it is easy to forget where you left off, especially when you get a crummy one (e.g. dot/clot, tile/file, zoo/coo) that is really hard to tell even with good eyesight (and mine's the best around).
Maybe just tone it down in the forge a bit, once every 10-15 BA is okay, but I got 3 checks within 10 BA on two seperate occasions this weekend alone.
Or are the checks excessive in the forge to TRY to mess you up?

Jason Bourne April 5 2005 4:29 AM EDT

yea i know, i keep forgetting where i left off when im interrupted...

AdminShade April 5 2005 5:19 AM EDT

forging isn't hard at all, you just have to concentrate.

Zoglog[T] [big bucks] April 5 2005 7:17 AM EDT

I forge by using colours not times, I forge using time the 1st time so I know the colour to start doing the little bits so if 80 minutes was dull cherry I remember that when I get there I do 5 then 1, it is very easy to remember because you can see it on the screen, alternatively for 8 lots of 10 you can count the amount of times you have heated.
Anyway onto the botchecks, I get an average of 1 every 5-10 ba but it doesn't affect me because they help the game more than ruin it hell I enjoy the chance to fit in a bit of cursive reading now and then :)

Bmagnety April 5 2005 8:10 AM EDT

way 2 many bot checks...........remove them from the forge all together

Will [Retired] April 5 2005 10:09 AM EDT

We are forgetting what bot - checks are for in the first place... stopping bots essentially.
If someone worked out a way to break the system it wouldn't matter how many checks there were because they could all be passed. Therefore we only need one or two checks for each time we log in don't we? Whats the average amount of BA people use at each log in, 100? If there was one check for every 50-75 BA then that would make it more fair.

So possibly reduce the certainty of getting a bot check; or introduce some sort of counter, so you know for the next 25 BA you aren't going to get checked (and after that it gets more certain). People would write bots to make jobs easier, if you still had to 'nanny' your bot to every check there would not be much point in doing it in the first place!

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] April 5 2005 10:53 AM EDT

Problem with that, is that it might be profitable for botters to still bot, and set the bot up to just pay the fine to continue fighting if the checks come at regular intervals...

Nixon Jibfest April 5 2005 11:46 AM EDT

has anyone ever used a Bot on CB that made the botcheck necessary?

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] April 5 2005 11:57 AM EDT

There were a couple of instances on CB1. The last fairly close to the start of CB2. Wizzrobe wasn't it? (Sorry If I've got the name incorrect, and am besmirching the name of a legit player!)

So yeah, they're necessary.
