Idea: WIKI help (in General)

Manta June 11 2005 6:53 AM EDT

Sorry for the formatting of the previous post

I think the help files are too sketchy, and sometimes inaccurate. I understand that Jonathan is quite busy, and has not the will/time to expand and update them.
On the other hand, I see that there are quite a few people with the knowledge and the will to dedicate time and efforts to give informations and help, both on post and on external web sites (and, I assume, on chat).
Therefore, I think that a wiki for the help files, on the model of Wikipedia could work very well.

As an explanation of what a wiki is, you can read the following article about Wikipedia, which appeared on Time magazine.

More in details, besides the current help files, there would be more pages written by various people in the community about various topics. Everybody with an account on CB could create and/or modify such pages. To keep destructive behaviour at bay, 48! people could not write.

Please add your comments, corrections and suggestions.

why do you think i am making my site? :P

bartjan June 11 2005 8:21 AM EDT

But why is it not a wiki?

AdminShade June 11 2005 10:24 AM EDT

Should it be a wiki then?

perhaps additional we could make a wiki :)

When I was speaking of the helpful people posting on CB and making external sites, I had Shade's site in mind.

I think that making a wiki on the CB site itself would work better than on an external web site, because it would be easier to access, and we could feel confident that it would not shut down after some time (I mean, before CB itself is shutted down).

However, Shade's (tentative) offer is also a good one, for many reasons, not least the fact that in this way a wiki could be tested: if at the end nobody writes on it, there would be no reason to make a wiki on CB. On the other hand, were it successful, we would have a good argument to convince Jon to make one also here.

Just so everyone knows what you're talking about. You want to expand on the CB page on Wiki. Yes?

Manta June 11 2005 11:06 AM EDT

No, Xiax (but I did not know that CB has a page on wikipedia).
What I proposed is that users should be able to modify the help pages on the this site. Wikipedia is one way of using a wiki.

Sorry, I meat "users should be able to modify the help pages on this site" (CB).

I should also add that what Shade was proposing is to make part of his site modifiable by other people.

Other people being able to edit shade's page is not the same as a wiki.
