Just bought this nice camera after searching very well for the best camera for my price range: Click for the website

It is a Canon Powershot A95, I am very happy with it :D

I think it's one of the best digital cameras currently, the only problem would be the battery life. I almost bought that one too, until I was told that after 15-20 shots, you will need to replace/recharge the battery.

AdminShade June 30 2005 4:05 AM EDT

depends on what battery you use...

I myself now have 1800 mAh batteries and they have so far lasted me over 100 shots with the display on (and should last me a lot more also)

TrueDevil [AAA] June 30 2005 4:12 AM EDT

hmm, I guess it depends on the batteries after all, how much does it cost for that 1800 mAh batteries and also what brand of battery ? Because I never really pay much attention to the type of batteries, but if it's really true like you said, 100+ shots with display on then I might buy this one too.

AdminShade June 30 2005 4:34 AM EDT

Well the batteries I use are GP Powerbank Batteries
The ones i am planning to buy for an extra are the 2500 mAh ones. Price range of the batteries varies from type to type... i think they are some €20 but I don't have an idea how much they would be in the US...

can also look on the official Gold Peak website

I've got the A70 which although a couple of years old now is still an amazing camera. Battery life is a problem though. If you do anything too clever - sepia, lots of zoom etc - the batteries are dead in a couple of hours. It's a good enough camera to use professionally so I'm sure the A95 follows in that grand tradition. I might have to take a look at it myself...

Nice camera, but don't go spending too much money on DSC's. There's only 18 months - 2 years max left on the < 8mpix market as it's about to be swallowed whole by the mobile phone companies.

You don't carry a camera with you where ever you go, but most people now carry a phone with them. You soon won't know if you are buying a phone with a camera or a camera with a phone.

At least I sincerely hope so otherwise I'm gonna be looking for a new job...

AdminShade June 30 2005 6:08 AM EDT

Quality of photos taken from mobile phones still is awful, they only have digital zoom, which is pixel enlarging (and bad imo), though they can now reach some 2 mpixel they still can't compete imo.

Also for mobile phones the battery capacity is just not high enough when you also have to call with it ;)

anyway its not a comparison of which is better so just leave me with my happy camera dance :P

AdminG Beee June 30 2005 6:37 AM EDT

I'll leave you doing your "happy camera dance" lol.

Just don't go buying another one in the future is all that I'm saying.

BTW, Samsung brought out a five megapixel camera phone last October and while it took the digital photography industry around six years to launch a six megapixel digital camera it seems the mobile phone industry is not hanging about. Reports from Korea are that LG Electronics is planning to launch the world's first SIX megapixel camera phone in Japan. It is thought that the sensor will come from Canon, the people who make your A95 ;-)
Phones with this sort of camera resolution are likely to have a have huge internal memory to store the large image files it would produce. And the image quality is unlikely to be a patch on the current crop of six megapixel compacts, but that's why I'm saying give it another 18 months - 2 years and we'll all have one.

As for battery life, the work that's being done on power consumption is 2nd only to that being done on image quality. It's only a matter of time...

/me watches Shade do his happy phone dance again, erm, whilst dressed as a chicken.

QBJohnnywas June 30 2005 6:41 AM EDT

I will always think that Shade looks like a giant chicken now. Thanks for that GB!
