Early last month, Manta
suggested creating a wiki to support community documentation a la Shade's site and others.
Here it is. Let's see if it was worth the effort. :)
In a wiki, anyone can edit any page without special permission. Go crazy. Do try to follow the style guide (linked from the wiki home); errors of ignorance will be gently corrected. Defacing the wiki, of course, will be dealt with appropriately, including by banning if necessary.
Mrwuss has accepted the title of editor-in-chief. This means that if mrwuss corrects you, he's probably right. :)

So -anyone- can change things and everyone else will also see it that way?

Where can I access the wiki from?

Why aren't tables supported in this wiki?
i.e. double and single bars || or |
because it's based on wikit, which doesn't support that feature, and I don't think it's important enough to spend hours adding it

Can "Ban user from posting to forums" be expanded to the wiki as well? ;)

I Created a new
Forging Formulas page with all the items broken down by category. Enjoy.

It would probably be a pretty convenient place to link to the Wiki from the Community page...?
bartjan: I guess we'll see if that's needed
personally I'd just rather ban them altogether

How about a link from the Tools menu on the left to the Wiki Home page?
AdminShade
July 1 2005 1:26 PM EDT
Why that if you have the link at the top of the left hand menu already?
Thanks Jonathan this will be very helpful for the community.
I do hope that the star players are putting their strategies in a special page. That would be very helpful for the new comers and for the players who are playing this game for a while. So, Sefton and Ranger and all the others there is a lot of work to do :)

So....................
Okay, this is a web page that anyone can edit?
Using this wiki language?
Can someone do up a real basic faq on this wiki language thing? :( I'm not sure I get it.

Can we assume that there will eventually be a link to the WIKI from the community link?
chernobyl
July 1 2005 3:20 PM EDT
There is a "Wiki" link on the left frame next to "Help" and "FAQs".. so it's not necessary anymore.
chernobyl
July 1 2005 3:23 PM EDT
Jon, I think the Wiki link is in a fine place but it seems the general public would look for it under "Community" or "Tools".. Your call =)
I missed the WIKI link simply because I didn't refresh the left frame. Nonetheless, I think the WIKI is more of a community tool since the community contributes to it, unlike FAQs and HELP. Either place works.

July 1 2005 3:35 PM EDT
I would look for the Wiki link in the same place where the Help and FAQ links are, as they are very related. Would you suggest moving those links as well?
AdminShade
July 1 2005 3:36 PM EDT
chernobyl, I would sooner think the public to be able to read previous posts in which it is explained to be on the top of the left frame a couple of times...

I agree, Shade! But it happens, and happened =) I was also thinking about the long-term, after this thread is buried.

I found this game through wikipedia actually, and I have a private wiki setup on my computer. I'm all for it and I already know what I would like to put up there. Thanks jon.
When you guys are putting stuff in there, make sure you use capitalization. Thanks :)

Never played around with wikis before. Can you tell if another person is editing the same page you are? In other words if 2 people are editing the same page, editor 1 saves his page, then a little later editor 2 saves his page. Are editor 1's changes lost?
What's the usual workaround for situations like that in a wiki?
Special J
July 1 2005 11:14 PM EDT
I love the work done so far,
and no, if the CONTENT is wrong then simply correct the numbers. That is what a wiki is for :)
Almuric: if I have time later I may add "locking" a la wikipedia. Until then the workaround is, check the recent edits after you save something to make sure someone didn't save just before you did. :)

I would like to thanks again Jonathan.
I was away for a few day, and from what I see after coming back I do think it was worth the effort (but I do not know how difficult it was to set it up...).

It certainly is worth the efforts indeed.
kudos to jonathan and everyone else of the cb community.
99% of the info of my site can be put in the wiki anyway and that 1% will be made to put in ;)

Please, don't use acronyms/abbreviations in wiki articles, without either also explaining the definition or (better) linking to the page about that definition.
Example, from the Steel Familiar page, how to find out what this 'MM' is?
The same happens often in New Players, where veterans sometimes dump acronyms on newbies at record breaking rates, without bothering to explain what they stand for...
Manta
July 4 2005 8:33 AM EDT
There is the glossary to define acronyms. But I agree with Bartjan.
However, it is not easy to link to the page with the definition: if, for instance, I want to use the acronym AMF in the page about DD spells, what should I write?
If I write [AMF], there is no page with that name.
Should I use AMF [Direct Damage Spells]?
Manta
July 4 2005 8:36 AM EDT
Sorry, I meant AMF [Enchant Offense Spells].
We could have an [AMF] page which says;
See glossary, or Short for Anti Magic Field, see [Enchant Offense]
I added a section on abbreviations to the
wiki style guide. In short, define terms before using them, and don't create pages that just define abbreviations.
:) Just seen.
Should we explain the combat rounds? Max 25, three ranged if any ranged attacks, etc. And explain what the 'Range' info of DD spells mean? Range 1 = melee for example.
If so, where would that go? Under getting started, or a seperate section?
AdminShade
July 4 2005 8:55 AM EDT
we should add it, under a [Fighting] page or at getting started indeed.
