Technically, on the other side of the world, the sky is NOT up (in relation to you). The sky would be DOWN. But I guess everybody just assumed he meant the sky above you.

Given that we define up, it means what we want it to mean. It's not as if it's an absolute direction that extends forever, like "east" or "west".
