Sefton's CB Birthday Extravaganza (in Contests)

QBJohn Birk [Black Cheetah Bazaar] July 14 2005 8:31 PM EDT

That's right folks, its my one year CB celebration, and you are all invited!

I have played this wonderful game for a full year now, and in celebration my party has cash and prizes, over 2mil in NW and CB2 $$$ They are not necessarily spectacular prizes, but they cost you nothing to win :)

There will be two prize sections, one first come first serve, and the second will be part of the contest.

The first section will be items that are mostly useful for new players, but I place no restrictions, so if you want something from the first section of prizes, simply post your desired item via the number next to it and include what character you would like it sent to. If you fail to do either, your request is invalid. Only one first section item per User. You can get a first section prize and still enter the second section contest.

FIRST SECTION PRIZES
#1 A Lesser Tattoo of Balrog Flame lvl 20 5,943
#2 A Lesser Fire Familiar lvl 20 5,920
#3 A Two-Handed Flail [66x5] (+5) 27,127
#4 A Two-Handed Flail [66x1] (+6) 15,480
#5 A Two-Handed Flail [66x4] (+0) 14,781
#6 A Two-Handed Flail [66x2] (+2) 7,979
#7 A Two-Handed Flail [66x1] (+2) 4,432
#8 A Compound Bow [5x9] (+3) 62,302
#9 A Compound Bow [5x10] (+0) 68,596

Now, for the contest. Since its my party, I want you to bring me some music, but not just any music, Grateful Dead music, so here is the contest part. To be eligible for the contest, your post must contain the name of a Grateful Dead song in "". The more I like the song, the better your post will be considered. Now, if you want to go the extra mile (recommended) you should include either the albumn it comes from, or the date of a live recording of the song and the venue. The BEST possible entry will also include a line from the song, one you like the best. I will rank each posters musical selection and pick winners from all of my favorite posts.

EXAMPLE

"Ripple"

Reckoning

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung,
Would you hear my voice come thru the music,
Would you hold it near as it were your own?

Thats would be a prize winner for certain :)

and here is what you are playing for:

Most likely multiple prizes will be given to each winner, unless I like so many of them. You are welcome to include which prizes you would prefer, but there is no guarantee you will get your chosen prize. So thats it, as my little girl's favorite sponge would say, its time to PARTAY! I got the gifts, you got the music?

QBJohn Birk [Black Cheetah Bazaar] July 14 2005 8:35 PM EDT

Sorry if I was unclear, I tried to be complete, the prizes #10-#30 are not first come first serve, but part of the contest, and thus without a Grateful dead song, you are not eligible to win Mega :)

"Box of Rain" from American Beauty, Track number 1, released circa 1970.

"Just a box of rain -
wind and water -
Believe it if you need it,
if you don't just pass it on
Sun and shower -
Wind and rain -
in and out the window
like a moth before a flame"

My favorite: Scarlet Begonias

She had rings on her fingers and bells on her shoes.
And I knew without askinÂ’ she was into the blues.
She wore scarlet begonias tucked into her curls,
I knew right away she was not like other girls, other girls.

"Blow Away"
Words and music by Brent Mydland and John Perry Barlow
Copyright Ice Nine Publishing; used by permission

A man and a woman come together as strangers
When they part they're usually strangers still
It's like a practical joke played on us by our Maker
Empty bottles that can't be filled...

A real grateful dead song ;)

"Saint Stephen"

Saint stephen with a rose, in and out of the garden he goes,
Country garden in the wind and the rain,
Wherever he goes the people all complain.

Stephen prospered in his time, well he may and he may decline.
Did it matter, does it now? stephen would answer if he only knew how.
Wishing well with a golden bell, bucket hanging clear to hell,
Hell halfway twixt now and then,
Stephen fill it up and lower down and lower down again.

got to go with there biggest hit......Touch of Grey

Must be getting early
Clocks are running late
Paint by number morning sky
Looks so phony
Dawn is breaking everywhere
Light a candle, curse the glare
Draw the curtains
I don't care 'cause
It's all right
I will get by I will get by
I will get by I will survive
I see you've got your list out
Say your piece and get out
Yes I get the gist of it
but it's all right
Sorry that you feel that way
The only thing there is to say
Every silver lining's got a
Touch of grey
I will get by I will get by
I will get by I will survive
It's a lesson to me
The Ables and the Bakers and the C's
The ABC's we all must face
And try to keep a little grace
It's a lesson to me
The deltas and the east and the freeze
The ABC's we all think of
Try to give a little love.
I know the rent is in arrears
The dog has not been fed in years
It's even worse than it appears
but it's all right.
Cows giving kerosene
Kid can't read at seventeen
The words he knows are all obscene
but it's all right
I will get by I will get by
I will get by I will survive
The shoe is on the hand it fits
There's really nothing much to it
Whistle through your teeth and spit
causeit's all right.
Oh well a Touch Of Grey
Kind of suits you anyway.
That was all I had to say
It's all right.
I will get by I will get by
I will get by I will survive
We will get by We will get by
We will get by We will survive

i love the whole song so here it is..and a little info i happend to find on it..idk if all this is cheating or w/e but i took the time to look for it, so if it counts 30,29,28

"Touch of Grey"
Hunter has posted the manuscript of an early draft of the song in his archives.
Recorded on

In the Dark
Covered by

Mighty Diamonds on Fire On the Mountain
First performance: September 15, 1982 at the Capital Centre, Landover, Maryland. "Touch of Grey" was the encore.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

light a candle, curse the glare
Hunter notes, in Box of Rain, that this line was by Garcia.
It is a clever play on the saying, coined by Adlai Stevenson in 1962 in reference to the death of Eleanor Roosevelt, that: "She would rather light a candle than curse the darkness..."

The line also provides a nice resonance with, and may be the source of, the album's title, "In the Dark."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

every silver lining's got a touch of grey
A play on the saying: "Every cloud has a silver lining."
This saying was also the basis for the song "Look For the Silver Lining," with words by B.G. de Sylva and music by Garcia's namesake, Jerome Kern.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I will survive
A key line for many Deadheads. The cartoon strip, "Rose Is Rose," by Pat Brady, included the line dribbling from a radio, published in September, 1995. http://arts.ucsc.edu/gdead/agdl/touc.html

Starkadhr Gudbrande July 14 2005 9:21 PM EDT

"Fire on the Mountain" From The Very Best of the Grateful Dead [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] that came out on September 16, 2003 under the Rhino / Wea label.

'Take a full pail of water just to cool him down.
Well, Fire, fire on the mountain...
Fire, fire on the mountain...'

My character is going to be so hot it's gonna take a full pail of water just to cool him down.

My choices are #30, #29, #11, #10, #20, #15, #17 and I wouldn't complain if I got some of the others. I'm a newbie so anything helps.

I'll pick #2 of the first ones for flame77507 his character is.. Rogaub

btw he's my cousin

RareSumo [Lucid Dreams] July 14 2005 9:30 PM EDT

I'd prefer the #20, 30, and 29 prizes in that order. I know I only get one, but they're there in priority so if I cant get 20, I'd like 30, and if I cant get that, 29.

My favorite song from the Grateful Dead is actually a part of 2 songs that were split. Lazy Lightning and Supplication. They were always played together for a short time, then they split it into 2 seperate songs. For the line I like the most, I'd put the whole Supplication if I could. I don't know what else you want to know.. Bob Weir's songs, really, but they were played by the Grateful Dead between '76 and '84 so I guess they count. Also, they were played in an unusual time, and I like hearing songs that aren't just 4/4... These are in 7/4, which I believe PF's Time is in, which is another good band/song.. anyway.. here's my answer without all the worthless stuff.

Supplication - '76-'84

Ghetto, it's a contest. He's not obligated to give anything out for any entry. Not only should you be patient, but don't be so demanding. Maturity usually prevails in situations as such. (.. psst.. I was the only one who asked for #20 and it was my favorite prize...) ... Anyway, if he doesn't give you a prize, he doesn't. If he does, gratz. Just wait.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY...

only GD reference I can think of is a party where some friends of mine were playing music, they opened the set with a wonderfully terrible version of the begining of "Casey Jones"...right into a song about hippies. I won't give you a line from Casey Jones, since the few I know are un-pg, but I will give you the only pg line from my friends band, "stupid hippie get a job, cut your hair and shave your legs".

CoolWater July 15 2005 9:32 AM EDT

Happy birthday Sefton, we have the same CB birthday.

QBJohnnywas July 15 2005 9:52 AM EDT

Happy CB Birthday Sefton!

So, Grateful Dead as your party music? MMM.. either you're only gonna hear one song - that will go on all night, or it's gonna be a very very long party

I guess you're also going to be eating Ben And Jerry's Cherry Garcia icecream as well then....

BooDiggens July 15 2005 11:53 AM EDT

*Boo sings* "I set out fighting, but I'll take my time,
For a friend of Sefton is a friend of mine,
And if I burn my BA before daylight, I just might get some sleep..tonight"

But my actual entry would have to be:

"Sugaree"

One from the Vault: A Live Recording of August 13, 1975 at The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco

Well shake it up now, Sugaree
I'll meet you at the jubilee
And if that jubilee don't come
Maybe I'll meet you on the run

Happy B-day Sefton!!!

Well, I've never heard of Grateful Dead, so I won't enter in the contest, and I'll save the free stuff for newbies. Kinda bad that I've been playing CB longer, and you're much better than me...but I don't fight that much, that's my excuse :P anyways..

Happy CB B-day, Sefton! :-)
