Why is CB so addicting? i mean, it's text-based yet it's so darn fun...Someone explain this to me lol!

[T]Vestax September 18 2005 4:51 PM EDT

Why ask Why. Some things can never be explained.

IndependenZ September 18 2005 5:02 PM EDT

That question is a very significant one. And I know from a very reliable source: 42. That's The Answer. ;p

My answer:

These are in no particular order.

1) The Strategies
2) The Items
3) The Players and above status quo intelligence levels of such people. (If you are wondering whether you are in this category, just stop and move on) :)
4) The Community as a whole
5) Personal Effort (Gotta keep feeding the fire)
6) Jonathan's occasional quips and sound tongue thrashings. :)
7) Break from Reality for a while.

8) Glory

Why is cb so addicting? Cuz you have nothing better to do.

I have no life what-so-ever.

Maelstrom September 18 2005 5:42 PM EDT

I could have a life if I weren't so addicted to this crazy game! \me grumbles...

The game itself remains interesting because of the regular changes. Character advancement remains interesting because you need to adapt to new changes, and because you can always improve your equipment and buy more rares.

The community is probably the greatest attraction, with such a variety of people and opinions. I'd say that the worst part about the "end of camping" is that it has reduced the interaction between players - it was always fun to try to find a buyer for an item you camped, or to bargain with campers for a new item.

CB is great because its something I can run and use up my BA on between classes and other things. I can spend a ton of time on forums and chat if I have free time, but if I don't, I can just log in real quick, fight 160 times, and go. Doesn't require total devotion to play effectively (note I said to play effectively, not to be #1.)

Chat's pretty good. Forums are great, and sometimes posts are hilarious.

Contests rock. Having player-made community-wide contests is almost totally a CB thing, I've never seen that on another MMO type game.

Its just a great game. Especially with all the recent changes. Excellent work Jonathan, you made a great game, you update it frequently, and you just got praise for what your accomplishments during a Changemonth. (wow!)

This is actually something I put a lot of thought into after I quit. I do actually think that it is addictive, rather than just fun. Still a great game though, don't get me wrong. - Even if I almost never play it anymore.

But to avoid a big long rant about why it's addictive, I'll just say it's fun because it has a great community, the strategy is interesting enough (I spent at least a year constantly coming up with new strategies, so it does have a great deal of depth), and of course, it is always fun to decapitate people. :)

That and when you're a chatop, it's definitely worth coming back just to /kick people. That never stops being fun. :D

why is rain always wet?

sssimmo September 19 2005 9:51 AM EDT

why does chocolate taste so good? -------Because it releases endofins.

why does peanut butter stick so much? --------Because they use peanut glue in manufacturing.

why is rain always wet? ------------Because its not a gas or a solid.

:P
