TGI 9/30!!! (in General)

QBBarzooMonkey September 30 2005 9:23 AM EDT

Whheewww!!! I am so glad it is the last day of September today! There have been some tough change months since January, but this one was unprecedented in it's sheer nastiness and misery! And except for the camping nerf, none of the actual changes were all that dramatic!

Here's hoping for a much more pleasant October! Cheers, all!!! :)

QBJohnnywas September 30 2005 9:26 AM EDT

Can we ban whining in October - I've clean run out of cheese after this month...

Here's to non-changemonth!

chappy [Soup Ream] September 30 2005 9:30 AM EDT

Being as how I'm still fairly new to the CB community I have a question .. Typically are there ever any surprise changes on the last day of change month??

QBJohnnywas September 30 2005 9:35 AM EDT

chappy, go through the old changelog forums - you'll see that there have been changes all the way through the change months. So don't be surprised if there was a change today. I'm not saying there will be one but you should always keep an open mind about these things!

Jon has said that he is going to release a statement on the future status of tournaments by the end of the month so expect to see a post within 24 hours.
Be prepared for disappointment though as it may not exactly be good news (I don't actually know so don't go trying to pull teeth from an empty gap :D)

*Shrugs*

Bar the removal of camping, nothing really game altering has been included this month. From what I can remember, same as last month.

Is it me, or has the number of posts in General dropped? Bar NUB complaining, is there really any game stuff left to talk about?

I think something new needs to be added just to shake things up a little.

But this is an existing player talking, everything is still going to be pretty new to a new user....

[EG] Almuric September 30 2005 9:55 AM EDT

Tournaments! Wow, it would be cool if we had tournaments again. Here's my original thoughts on the subject. Tournaments in CB1 did change substantially after I made that post, so not all of it would be applicable anymore.

But a 2-round tournament, where the first week everyone can create a char and during the second week only the top 64 (or 32 or whatever) characters go on to some sort of single (or double) elimination tournament, with brackets and seeding and betting(?).

Let me repeat my offer, Jon, of help in coding this. I'll even go so far as to offer to learn TCL. (Hell, if I ever need another job, a new programming language couldn't hurt.) I know you're reluctant to open up your codebase, but I really wouldn't have to see very much of it. Like Knuth says, "Don't show me your code, show me your data structures." If you want, I'll sign some sort of non-disclosure agreement, even.

Anyway, let me join the masses in requesting, once again, for tournaments of some sort to be added to the game.

how comfortable are you with SQL, almuric?

QBBarzooMonkey September 30 2005 10:03 AM EDT

Now this is a thread hijacking that I fully back! Go, tournaments, yes!!! :)

[EG] Almuric September 30 2005 10:07 AM EDT

Actually, SQL is what I do all day. Mostly SQL Server these days, but we also have some Oracle databases, so I do PL/SQL some, too. But plain, standard SQL is one of the 3 things I know best, along with C and perl.

AdminJonathan September 30 2005 11:08 AM EDT

I'll chatmail you when the dev box is ready for you.

Tezmac September 30 2005 11:18 AM EDT

Great goin' Almuric!!

Quark September 30 2005 12:56 PM EDT

Tournies may be able to solve some of the NUB complaints if the veteran runs the tourney char for the explicit goal of draining cash from it. Or allow longer tournaments with no retiring at the end (like 4 weeks) to build up new chars.

AdminShade September 30 2005 1:00 PM EDT

Tournaments can be used for a great number of things.

as example: there will be a number of NUB users that want to play in the tournaments also, making them grow less in mpr for their normal characters :)

[EG] Almuric September 30 2005 1:11 PM EDT

Cool.

Pysche September 30 2005 1:21 PM EDT

Only 32 days until next change month.
Sleep well ;)
