Let's not get into a religious/political talk. As per the rules I am going to close this before someone gets offended and a bigger issue has to be dealt with.

Sorry folks.

And don't use the back button to post in a thread that has been locked, it only irritates me. There are plenty of places to talk about religon on the internet, this happens to not be one.

AdminJonathan October 13 2005 2:29 PM EDT

Hmm.

I appreciate mrwuss's efforts to try to keep CB civil, but I don't recall "no politics or religion" being part of "the rules," as long as it's in off-topic where it belongs. Just try to keep the heat low.

(After all, Canada-bashing has a long and storied history here. :)

I believe the great George Carlin put it best.

"The earth doesn't share our prejudice towards plastic...plastic came out of the earth, the earth probably sees plastic as just another one of its children...could be the only reason the earth allowed us to be spawned from it in the first place: it wanted plastic for itself, didn't know how to make it, needed us. Could be the answer to our age-old philosophical question...why are we here?: plastic, {edit}."

"Every Wonder Why God Put you On Earth?"

Not as often as I wonder why the hell some others are here. ;)

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] October 13 2005 6:34 PM EDT

I've not experienced enough evidence to assure me I was put here by anything other than chance. I'm not closed to the possibility, it just isn't a compelling one for me.

QBOddBird October 13 2005 6:35 PM EDT

I look in the mirror and am convinced that God is a fine, fine artist.

*winks*

Can't you get treatment for the blindness OddBird ?

AdminShade October 13 2005 6:49 PM EDT

God, if he/she/it exists, has put me on Earth because Mars was full already and because they didn't want me on Venus.

And then he just told me to play CB ;)

Unwanted Memories October 13 2005 6:54 PM EDT

The reason I am here...

I'm here for when my girlfriends need a pickle jar opened, someone to get the pots off of the high shelf, carry grocerys, walk the dog, give them my paycheck, and finally to annoy them with the little things that women hate.

" yes dear" " yes dear" " i was listening i swear" "you want me to tell you what you said?" " yes dear".....

RAMPAGE October 13 2005 7:48 PM EDT

Does God exist? Thomas on God
God as necessary Being
1) Contingent beings are caused
2) Not every being can be contingent
3) There must exist a being which is necessary to cause contingent beings
4) This necessary being is God.

Atheistic Point of view:

-Belief in god and religion is a product of human suffering.
( economic oppression of the working class)
-Belief in god is a drug imposed upon the poor by the ruling class to divert attention away from the oppression of the poor.
-Religions are "obsessional neuroses" and we will eventually outgrow them.

In between?
Pascals Wager:

1) If i believe that god exists and god does exist, i will gain infinite happinnes
2) if i believe that god exists and god does not exist, i will gain nothing.
3) if i do not believe that god exists and god does exist, i will suffer infinite pain.
4) if i do not believe that god exists and god does not exist, i will suffer nothing.
5) thus, i have infinite rewards to gain and nothing to lose by believing in gods existence. Furthermore, i risk infinite penalties and gain nothing if i disbelieve in gods existence.
6) On these grounds, It would be foolish ot to believe in God.

Stryfe October 16 2005 4:02 PM EDT

I'll give my "PG" account now. :)

Noone knows if a god(s) exist. Some people don't care, some do. For those of you who are in search if truth, I'll give some points. There are thousands of religions, this being true, its pretty simple to say that 99.9% of these religions were created my man. It may be logical to go the extra inch and say all 100% were.

My belief is God was created by man. Why? Religion is a powerful tool driven by reasoning. Its hard for me to sit here and address all the Theistic theories at the same time. Its no doubt that most of you are Christians since most of you are from North America, colonized by Christian Europe when they commited Genocide on an entire race of Native Americans, the leftovers had Christianity beaten into them. I guess they saw an Asterisk after Thou shall not kill. Then they decided to label African Americans 1/5th human and put them into Slavery.

The reason you are Christians and not some other obsure religion is because Constantanople adopted Christianity. Through most of time the Monarches of nations adopted Christianity and revised it some - such as in King Henry's case of the Church of England, where he Added that he was Divine and had a direct link with god.

Why did they adopt Christianity? (Or even why did Christian or theistic nations have a higher tendency to Survive?) This goes back to natural selection. Natural selection does not have to be limited to the theory that organisms more fit to survive will have a higher tendency to survive and multiply, therefore if an Organism adopts a certain trait, the organisms that have that trait will eventually overcome those without the trait. This application can be applied to Nations more fit to survive will...

Why did Nations with Religion tend to survive longer? The peasants stayed in line because their morals were on a Divine level. You would follow the rules more if God told you not to kill than if some random guy told you, would you? Would you also have a higher tendency to follow the rules if you were a god-fearing peasant who was told if he doesn't listen to the Monarch(Who has a direct link with god?) You can take it from here using logic.

During the Churches highest period, commonly refered to as the "Dark Ages", the Church used to make people Pay Huge sums of money to "Repent" their sins. Only the Rich and wealthy could afford to repent. What did the church do with this money you ask? They used it to Wage Wars.

I could go on and on, I've done a great deal on this subject. Most people who believe in god haven't gave it much thought(Which might account for them believing the ridiculous nature of Theism.) The most common question I am asked is "How could we be here if something didn't create us?" The answer to that question is "If everything must be created, then who created the god, who created who created the god, who created who created the got that created god?" If you keep going something came from nothing eventually.

I recommend you:
Read into the Natural Selection theory. Read into Atheism. Read into Pacifism and Secular Humanism.

Davie October 16 2005 6:30 PM EDT

Lol kind of off subject, but for those who it concerns, I too am Canadian.

( Well technically, im 1/2 Canadian and 1/2 American , my Mother is Canadian and my father is American.)

Lumpy Koala October 17 2005 1:17 AM EDT

Stryfe is a brilliant scholar :P

No offense to all 'religions' but I do believe that the reason I am here, is not of any divine power, it's just some alcohol + romantic tune that my parents had 25 years ago.

Stryfe October 17 2005 3:32 AM EDT

Well down with bush said basically said you should believe that a God exists because you have nothing to lose. This isn't true because you either believe or you don't believe. You don't pretend to believe, I'm sure the "ruler of the universe" who knows all can tell if your lying. Furthermore, what is the reasoning for playing with peoples minds, if he wants people to "believe" in him he could just show himself, and it there would be no question. The reason he doesn't or 'can't' show himself is he doesn't exist. Theism wouldn't work well if they didn't supply a reason for this - but they don't supply a reason(Besides saying he gave you free will.) Kind of a cop out...

Everyone would agree that free will is great, but when God had a clean slate and was creating "Humans", he could have just as easily made humans not desire free will, and it would have still made sense. Free will and the desires a god gave you are not Constants, they were created. So saying God doesn't revail himself because he must sustain his Good Nature by supplying free will as a constant value... Do you get the point?

God doesn't show himself because god doesn't exist.

I could write a Bible if I wanted to, probably more convincing than the previous one. The Bible was written by man. You could go onto a New York subway station and find a few homeless people who claim to be God. Did I mention Jesus was a homeless bum? lol

Jesus and the Apostles were all Homeless and Mary was a prostitute. What a combo.

Grim Reaper October 17 2005 5:25 AM EDT

That is the only point/question I have ever tried to ask others in my debate over this God nonsense.

Grim Reaper October 17 2005 5:29 AM EDT

One slight problem w ith your bible was written by man is that theres no way in hell a human would be able to pull off writing something like that with all the books/stuff in there all making sense and at the same time having codes and all sorts of stuff talking about the future the present the past w/e with all the names of people. There is just too much stuff in there for simple minded person back then to be able to write up all that.

WAB; "your bible was written by man is that theres no way in hell a human would be able to pull off writing something like that"

Here man is used in the plural. The individual passages were written over time by many people. And there were more written than has been included.

;)

Now it is such a bizarrely improbable coincidence that anything so mindboggingly useful could have evolved purely by chance that some thinkers have chosen to see it as the final and clinching proof of the non-existence of God.

The argument goes something like this: `I refuse to prove that I exist,' says God, `for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing.'

`But,' says Man, `The Babel fish is a dead giveaway, isn't it? It could not have evolved by chance. It proves you exist, and so therefore, by your own arguments, you don't. QED.'

`Oh dear,' says God, `I hadn't thought of that,' and promptly vanished in a puff of logic.
