No Politics or Religious discussion allowed in CB? (in General)

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] October 13 2005 3:17 AM EDT

I've gotta agree with Bart on this. Where did this come from? I remember a user who used to post a Religious discussion every Sunday (for a while...). Of course, posts of these natures should be in 'Off Topic' but posting there or in Chat isn't against any CB rule I know of...

RIPsalt3d October 13 2005 3:26 AM EDT

You just bought yourself a fine, mister.

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] October 13 2005 3:31 AM EDT

What for? Asking the same question Bartjan did, but in a seperate thread?

AdminG Beee October 13 2005 4:30 AM EDT

The only time talking about politics and religion is taboo (imo) is when the discussion degenerates into nastiness and non-pg rants. That however is the same with any discussion in CB.

Chat rooms after all are all about chat.

Keep it reasonable and within the normal boundaries of what's expected in CB and you are on safe ground. Better still, if you want to talk about "controversial" topics make yourself a separate chat room "/join politics" and have yourself a good old argument/discussion in there. Heck, I may even join in :)

As for naming yourself after political or religious figures I'd ask that you show consideration to the other users on CB and think of the potential for offense you may cause.

Vaynard [Fees Dirt Cheap] October 13 2005 4:38 AM EDT

It definitely seems like a case of overkill. What does it matter what we talk about as long as we keep it PG? I enjoy the occassional good argument on politics and religion. You never get anywhere, but it can be fun all the same.

I kinda wonder, is this official? Or maybe just somehow some sort of a miscommunication? I really hope so. First they banned entrepeneurship in the main chatrooms, and now maybe this? Where's the line? People can be offended or bugged by some pretty stupid things. Are we really wanting to make something of nothing? If you don't like it, why not ignore it or leave?

AdminShade October 13 2005 5:50 AM EDT

As long as it does not disrupt chat, or make people very angry for any reason, I think it should be allowed.

Don't we all love to talk about our lovely Dutch Prime Minister MR Harry Potter =D

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] October 13 2005 5:53 AM EDT

That can't be his real name.... o_O

QBBast [Hidden Agenda] October 13 2005 6:04 AM EDT

"As for naming yourself after political or religious figures I'd ask that you show consideration to the other users on CB and think of the potential for offense you may cause. "

At the very least, the current offender should be using a capital 'B', so we can all be sure he is, in fact, referencing the soulless politician proper noun. The capital 'B' would take the double entendre out of it, and make it a violation of only one (possible) rule instead of one possible and one actual rule. :)

QBJohnnywas October 13 2005 6:12 AM EDT

Yes, the lack of the capital 'B' bothered me. People should shout their intentions loud and clear, not beat around the bush...

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] October 13 2005 6:32 AM EDT

LOL!! Lack of nicotine is sharpening you wit Johnny! ;)

Just a shame it'll dull that six pack of yours! :P

QBJohnnywas October 13 2005 6:36 AM EDT

Just wait until the cravings really kick in... I'm hell to live with then....anybody that even mildly annoys me had better watch out......lol

QBOddBird October 13 2005 9:25 AM EDT

I agree with Bart on it as well. It should be OK to discuss to an extent, such as when a president is about to be elected, discussing their positive and negative points, things to that extent - but not naming yourself after a political stand that could offend another. Not flaming a political figure consistently in a chat/thread/whatever. (not saying tony did that, either, I'm just giving the example.)

Relic October 13 2005 10:14 AM EDT

If people are getting worked up over character naming with a political theme, what about all the Satanistic, Devilish names that I myself find to be in bad taste? Do I complain or think they should not be allowed to pick a non-pg name that is religiously offensive to me? Yes, as long as it keeps the rules as outlined I have no (outward) problem with it.

Relic October 13 2005 10:21 AM EDT

"should not be allowed" should be "should be allowed" it's early. :P

AdminQBVerifex October 13 2005 1:03 PM EDT

As soon as the rules start caving into demands of political correctness that means we've fallen down the slope already.

heavyhits October 13 2005 1:10 PM EDT

At this point in time, I have NO PROBLEM not talking about religion. It's not that I don't love God or that God doesn't love me.....it's the idea that God doesn't like my car, and that's why it's now broken......

{CB1}-Mokaba October 13 2005 1:55 PM EDT

We always blame someone else don't we?........:p

AdminJonathan October 13 2005 2:32 PM EDT

I am fine with political and religious discussion both in the forums (as long as it stays in off-topic) and in chat. (But if it's just a few of you going at it in chat, take it to PM or a private room, as always.)

We continue to reserve the right to close or delete threads that get out of hand, but in principle this is fine.

I remain committed to keeping CB "PG," but if you're offended by people questioning your opinions, well, what are you doing on the internet? :)

AdminNightStrike October 13 2005 3:34 PM EDT

So if that's the case, Jonathan, then what comes of how mrwuss treated "down with bush"? How does your view on threads affect your view on political/religious names? Is "down with bush" not an allowable name? Is mrwuss correct, or is he wrong? Does he deserve repercussions, as well?

LumpBot October 13 2005 3:53 PM EDT

NIghtStrike why does everything have to be black and white? I say this a lot in my line of work. Everyone is human, we all make mistakes sometimes and we have opinions. mrwuss saw it one way, and Jonathan saw it another, I think punishing mrwuss for his view on keeping the game stress free should not create problems. If you really know down_with_bush you'd realize he is an instigator and likes to start arguements. I personally think mrwuss was just trying to stop him before he opened a political war-fare on CB.

It is also rather silly everyone is taking this so far. mrwuss has put in an enormous amount of effort to keep forums and chat clean(although I rarely chat). Just because his move wasn't accepted once, doesn't mean we should start 3 threads about it.

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] October 13 2005 4:12 PM EDT

this is simple, we have admins so trolls (people who are starting a fight because they are bored, mostly) don't have the place in an uproar. The pseudo anonymity of the internet encourages the kind of stupid rablerousing that is equivalent to shouting fire in a crowded building, you have to have folks willing to maintain a forum. Sure there is a slipperly slope, but I've never met anyone on CB with enough of an authoritarian taint to really push us down it. Even Di at the point where she was deoped was still acting in a sensible manner. I've had my share of political discussions in chat, and half have probobly been quelched by someone who encouraged the interested parties to join a private room. The rest of the discussions went on mostly without incident, mostly due to my frequent use of /ignore when ever someone said something particularly agregous. The forums on cb have always been troll free, and I like it that way. Which is onl suprising because I'm a heavy ararcist when it comes to the net, well I'll say libertarian, because rules should be basicly as simple as self enforment, if someone is starting a stupid flame war, say so, in the thread and often you'll find it's shut itself up. *looks down at the now purring kitten on his lap* aparently I'm done...did this have a point?

48Zach October 13 2005 4:16 PM EDT

... im glad thats over with because i made a thread and it had to get closed because of this.. mrwuss closed it .. lol nothin happened either

AdminJonathan October 13 2005 4:54 PM EDT

I'm not going to "discipline" mrwuss for attempting to make CB a better place.

48Zach October 13 2005 4:55 PM EDT

was not expecting you to , i thought myself he was doing a fair thing if that was the case , just was saying.

Bull3t F4c3 October 13 2005 7:10 PM EDT

my view is that no one should get punished..and tony should be allowed back into chat without getting killed everytime he enters...if mrwuss has a probelm with his name, he should just change it without having tony have to pay 50k..as this was the first time it ever happened...

Maelstrom October 13 2005 7:15 PM EDT

Why are there so many religious/political threads this week?

Is it because, with everyone's score dropping, we're looking to some sort of "higher power" for answers?

(P.S: I suspect the scores are down because Mikel sold his character, not because the gods don't like CBers.)

RIPsalt3d October 13 2005 7:40 PM EDT

Sorry, GL, it was just another of my cryptic attempts at humour. :)

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] October 14 2005 3:00 AM EDT
