How does it do this, how much 'resistance' is there and has this been tested?

I do not know the percentage (although I could probably look it up in the code) but, the physical damage reduction from ST is small, even with a huge ST.

No one really know how much reduction in damage occurs.
However, as it has been posted, the effects are quite minor compared to the effects of strength and weapons.
