Keyboard Remapping (in Off-topic)

Maelstrom December 5 2005 1:15 AM EST

I was sitting here, eating with one hand and trying to C-enter with the other, and I had a stroke of genius: remap a key nearer to the Enter button (I chose the "context-menu" button) to the "c" button!

After some searching, I found KeyTweak, a freeware graphical utility that interfaces with the Windows registry to edit key functions. It's very easy to use, and even has undo functions.

The only problem is that you have to reboot before the changes take effect. I suppose you would probably need to be sys admin to run it, but I'm not sure. Oh, and it can only do single keystrokes, not combinations, and only change to the normal key functions, not special/custom ones. Still a nice utility :)

The Dvorak keyboard layout has the C key where "regular" Qwerty keyboards have the I key.
On Unix systems, you can just use the standard xmodmap command to remap keys or complete layouts, as a regular user and with no reboots. This way I have made the alias 'asdf' to switch to Dvorak and 'aoeu' (the same keys ;) to switch back to Qwerty.

KeyTweak is the best I have found for Windows. Rebooting isn't their fault; it's inherent to how the remapping process works.

Mael,

Stroke of genius? Or simply a stroke? Nurse, come and wipe the drool off my clan-mate's face, it's interfering with his keyboard!

with regards to your particular problem. Eat with both hands. Then play.

I guess I'm just not hardcore enough.....

Lol. ;)

Maelstrom December 5 2005 9:36 AM EST

Ouch, you got me Johnny. "Nurse, have the hitmen take care of him on his way home from work." ;)

But really, the only complaint I've heard from people about the C-enter method is that it takes two hands, but down-enter only takes one - here's the solution.

It's just an overall useful utility - I've occasionally wished I could remap keys, but the registry was too painful to deal with.

And Jon, I know rebooting is unavoidable :)

Is it just me, am I more weird than I though ?

I use a bog standard MS keyboard and my thumb & pinkie quite comfortably manage "c" and "enter" without the need to move. This leaves my other hand free to use the TV remote control.

Maelstrom December 5 2005 9:58 AM EST

I suppose my thumb & pinkie can manage to reach both "c" and "enter", but I wouldn't call it quite comfortable! Do we need a poll to find out which one of us is the weird one? ;)

AdminG Beee December 5 2005 10:12 AM EST

ok, my thumb and pinkie have a "wingspan" just a smidge under 10". (There's a sentence I never thought I'd type) The keyboard distance from "c" to "enter" is 7".

I'm comfortable ;)

QBBast [Hidden Agenda] December 5 2005 10:30 AM EST

Beee, you have man paws. I checked my handspan and it is 8 inches, if I'm really stretching.

And where do you put your keyboard, I have to lean significantly to fit either my right or left hand in that position. And are you actually 'pressing' the keys or just tilting your hand first one way then the other?

AdminG Beee December 5 2005 10:51 AM EST

"man paws" - heh :p

My keyboard sits in front of me in my ergonomic workspace. I use the well practiced rocking method of pinkie and thumb both sitting on their respective keys at the same time.

I'm not a freak and don't believe my hands are overly large. I certainly don't use the one handed approach as a general rule however when I need to it's not a problem and seems a lot less painful than (getting back on topic here) downloading freeware and re-booting every time I want to change apps.

QBBarzooMonkey December 5 2005 10:51 AM EST

If I rest my left hand thumb on the wrist support thingee, I can comfortably do pinky-c / pointer finger-return... :P

QBJohnnywas December 5 2005 10:55 AM EST

I now have a picture in my head (somebody brainwash me please...) of G Beee sitting in his 'ergonomic workspace' - ie one of those big leather bachelor recliner chairs that have a holster for the remote control and a holder for your cold beverages - surrounded by family all with giant hands watching the telly on a cold Scottish evening while 'wifey' brings him his deep fried dinner on a tray...

Mem December 5 2005 11:59 AM EST

I can also quite easily hit 'c', enter with apparent ease using Beee's one-handed method and I'm certainly no giant. I've even got a condition with my pinkie finger where the tendon hasn't quite grown as long as the bone and as a result I can never fully straighten my finger, so it should be no problem for the rest of you. :P

AdminShade December 5 2005 3:10 PM EST

thumb = C
ring finger = enter.

no problems

Special J December 5 2005 5:42 PM EST

firefox + grease monkey + Verifex's fightlist script = only hitting the enter key.

Rommel [Darkest Hour] December 6 2005 10:09 PM EST

how would I obtain said fightlist script? :)

Maelstrom December 6 2005 10:21 PM EST

Verifex's script stopped working on my computer for some reason, after I updated greasemonkey.

I don't know where to find it... there was a thread with a link many months ago.
