Need a Tolkien themed name, see inside: Please help me! (in Contests)

AdminShade December 8 2005 10:15 AM EST

This 'contest' isn't so much about money, perhaps I could find some money to give the winner, but it's more about honor and helping out a friend I think.

I am in need of a Tolkien related name for an item of mine.

The item in question is a Cornuthaum, being worn by my Enchanter.
The name of this Enchanter is Ungoliant, which is the ancestor of Shelob, an evil spider-like creature living in the first era of the time lines of the Lord of the Rings.

More about the theme I have, My other minion is a Tank, called Melkor also known as Morgoth.

The link between the 2 minions is the destruction of the Lamps of the Valar Melkor and Ungoliant worked together to destroy the 2 lamps after which Ungoliant fled south and Melkor escaped into the dungeons of Utumno.

Finding items for Melkor to wear is quite easy as it is a humanoid figure and items he used were documented, but for Ungoliant it is quite hard to think of good names, because a spider doesn't wear armor obviously.

So now for the actual 'quest' in finding good names:

Should I go with something along the lines of, and perhaps controversial, as "The Lamps of the Valar"?

Or should I go along with more basic things and have it be the head of Ungoliant, or some special armament?

I have looked for about 3 hours now to find a special name for the Cornuthaum but alas to no avail.

Perhaps you, the reader of this message, can help me find the name, or give me hints about it.

Perhaps you should be thinking more in terms of spider related names?

In Old English spider is 'gangewifre' which translates as 'weaver as he goes'. Now, as a lot of Tolkien's language was based on Old English you could have more success finding an online Modern English - Old English dictionary and searching for spider related things....?

Oh, and BTW, I didn't realise this was a contest! I was reading too quickly and thought it was just a brainstorming session!

So have my suggestions for free!

I can't think of Tolkien-specific names, but you could use names from spider anatomy. For instance: Maybe name is "Cephalic Plating"? "Armoured Cephalothorax"? "Ocular Implants"? "Enchanted Ocelli"?

Or you could use a name from that other horrible cave-dwelling creature, from Monty Python & The Holy Grail:

Name the Corn "Nasty big pointy teeth"!

Spider related terms would be nice, if they'd fit.

Monty Python is funny but not what I'm looking for...

hmmm

alrighty shade.. i will see what i can do for ya.

i have a book called "Creatures of Middle Earth", and it has some stuff in here about Ungoliant, Demon of the void.

in fact i use this book to name my items.. so maybe it can help you.

ungoliant (meaning.. Great spider-monster) was the most powerful demon to ever enter Arda. She was a spirit of the void (nothingness), the incarnation of darkness.

She was one of Morgoth's earliest allies, and she kept rebeling against his sevices, for she became obsessed with light, and wanted to devour it and turn it into her darkness, the Unlight, that destroyed all light and good things.

when Morgoth desired the silmarilli (great jewels) he easily persuade ungoliant to join in his quest to get it. (i'm not going to go into detail about the raid on Valinor), but she joined him cause she wanted the jewels for herself.

they got the jewels, and had a big quarrel. she was chased away by 2 balrogs to the dark valley. they say that she made alot of babies and this is where Shelob was created. then they also say that the hunger at last became to great for her, and already having devoured her mates, she proceeded to consume herself.

the really special thing about her was that she devoured the light and turned it into darkness, called the unlight....

trying to think of a name for your corn has been tough..

maybe... "The Unlight" that's the best i could come up with

i hope this helps anyways.

It doesn't have to be an object right? As pointed out earlier, it can be an attribute or a goal.
So....

[a | the | an]

{devouring}

[clinging | obscene | unholy | creeping]

[stain | shroud | cloud | mist | void | jewel | diadem]

{of}

[unlight | nothingness | darkness]

Pick one from each [] block. Optionally choose one or more {} blocks.

If I win anything, please donate it to ChildsPlay2005

Wow BiscuitBack, you done some research, but:

...and already having devoured her mates, she proceeded to consume herself.

I also know some things about Ungoliant and i never have seen proof of her consuming herself, but it would make sense.

However after a long long talk with chappy I now have my name, but i have to thank you all for your efforts.

Well, if you've decided on a name, don't leave us in suspense! What is it?

AdminShade December 9 2005 4:06 AM EST

I will tell soon, just don't want anyone to use it before me :p

Nah I'll tell the name:

"Dark Webs of Gloom"
