Idea for new gear: Look inside (in General)

chappy [Soup Ream] January 26 2006 8:24 AM EST

I'll make this pretty simple for now. I was thinking how we have DBs that lower the opponent's Pth, but we don't have anything that lowers opponent's damage multipliers on weapons ... I thought maybe it would be a good thing to discuss and see where that goes ...

Obviously if it were placed on a new footwear then you'd have to decide between DB and the new item. If, however it was placed on a piece of headgear then you could have the best of both worlds :) now wouldn't that shake things up..

AdminShade January 26 2006 8:40 AM EST

how would you plan on balance it?

IndependenZ January 26 2006 8:50 AM EST

So basically, you are trying to lower the damage done by weapons? Instead of just lowering STR?

chappy [Soup Ream] January 26 2006 8:52 AM EST

well that was kinda the idea ... the same as the DB lowers the Pth rather than dex ...

bartjan January 26 2006 8:52 AM EST

We already have that. We call it "armo(u)r".

*PirateKing uses this thread as an excuse to proffer his much maligned "Firearms and Explosives" suggestion yet again*

*PirateKing further hopes that Jon will not send Guido and Nunzio to break PK's kneecaps for bringing up the above mentioned lame suggestion*

:P

If are searching for something REALLY NEW, then you can propose magical potions, that will fill a new slot in the inventory.

a red potion that makes you +10% str for 3 turns...

you know that, very classical...

Tezmac January 26 2006 1:26 PM EST

I agree with Bart, we already have this in the CMLs. Add to the +, reduce the damage you take.

chappy [Soup Ream] January 26 2006 1:30 PM EST

im not talking about reducing the damage you take, im talking about reducing the damage that opponents deal.

Maelstrom January 26 2006 1:32 PM EST

You mean like a familiar of Ethereal Chains?

Zoglog[T] [big bucks] January 26 2006 1:37 PM EST

An item to directly reduce the x of a weapon is a bad idea unless the cost of each + is at least double the upgrade costs for the x on a katana or exec. The DB's are fair enough because the + on a weapon is a lot cheaper and easier to boost over 100 than the x in general and it is unlikely if you are smart enough for your plus-to-hit to go under that of the DB's you face.

QBsutekh137 January 26 2006 1:38 PM EST

Chappy's idea is also anti-tank specific. Like an equipment means of Ethereal Chains.

Then again, we already have Ethereal Chains (anti-tank specific) and specialty xbows (anti-tank specific).

Having an x reducer (based on same curve as x upgrades for the big weapons) would just be another brinkmanship money sink for the higher-end. That's fine by me, but kind of ho-hum, no?

PirateKing January 26 2006 1:42 PM EST

Ah.. I see. I think. He wants a "Rust Familiar". :P

chappy [Soup Ream] January 26 2006 2:03 PM EST

Yea I know that Etheral Chains is out there, but I don't see why everybody is so against this.

DB does essentially the same exact thing for the + on weapons. The Pth is very different from dex just as the x on weapons is very different from str.

AdminShade January 26 2006 2:06 PM EST

chappy, it would be yet another anti tank item, there are so many out there already... :)

QBsutekh137 January 26 2006 3:35 PM EST

Chappy, I am not against it. It's just that new ideas which are a slight variation on existing items "at best" usually get no more than a "meh" from Jonathan. For example, when someone suggested some sort of melee damage increaser that sounded kind of neat (was that Gl?), Jonathan's response was something along the lines of: "A bloodlust rehash -- not interested".

In other words, if there exist items, familiars, enchantments, etc. that have the same effect for what you desire (what is the difference between lessening damage inflicted and damage taken?), then what would this new item offer?

Frankly, there are enough items that can defeat other items and/or spells. It is one of the reasons (IMO) that USD reigns supreme.
