Probably because rewards are multiplied by a random percentage to make variation.

Amounts aren't static, there is a small amount of randomness in the amount generated. There's almost nothing static in this game, from what I can see.
I bet part and/or all of it is the fact that your healing costs are deducted from that number before you see it. The damage in the game is all randomized, so it would make sense that you'd end up healing differing amounts, and thus paying differing amounts from your rewards. I think. @.@

Your final reward is multiplied by a random number after the fight is said and done. Someone figured out what the multipliers were at some point, I want to say it was a random number selected from: .75 1.0 1.25 1.5 1.75 and maybe some lower ones too. They were very uniform numbers. It's been awhile since I saw that post though.

Determined by Virtual Power Rating (VPR) and score of involved players. (Fighting someone with signifigantly less Virtual Power Rating will result in reduced Fight Rewards). So the first time you fought them you lowered their Virtual Power Rating , and the second time you got lowered rewards due to that.
It's actually opponents score if I'm not mistaken, not VPR.
