Question: 1H VS 2H ?? Need your inputs (in General)

Vahilor June 10 2006 7:30 AM EDT

Dear all,

I'm a relatively new player and my question is centered around the strategy that i am trying to build (1Minion TOA tank with as high as possible AC). After reading some posts and doing some reading, i've gathered the following information(which you all probably already know).

+ 1H melee weapons now have a 50% higher base chance-to-hit than 2H weapons
+ (1H base to-hit went up; 2H base to-hit went down)
+ this affects how easy it is to get double hits from DX as well

Negative 4% to DX when equipped with 1-handed melee weapons and crossbow class weapons
Negative 6% to DX when equipped with 1-handed melee weapons and bow class weapons
Negative 10% to DX when equipped with 2-handed weapons
Negative 12% to DX when equipped with 2-handed weapons and crossbow class weapons
Negative 14% to DX when equipped with 2-handed weapons and bow class weapons

My immediate observation is, 2-handed weapons seem significantly disadvantaged over 1-handed weapons. And its a particularly painful observation considering i just bought my MH, which took me a long time to save up for.

The ringing thought in my head goes like this. 2H weapons do have a damage advantage, but given the significant to-hit advantage of 1H weapons, that damage advantage is totally nerfed - reason being, just a vague example,

MH [84X10] + 10 VS A BoTH [73X10] + 10

MH could do potentially 840 damage with one hit, but the BoTH having a higher to-hit% could potentially do 730*2=1460 damage with 2 hits.

My next thought is, "ok, maybe i'm missing some facts"

I should think that the missing link is how the base to-hit is affected by Dex and by the weapons +to-hit.

I'll summarize the questions in point form
----------------------------------------------------------
1) In your opinion, are 1H weapons overpowered VS 2H weapons? If yes or no, why?
2) How does dex, weapon base to-hit and weapon +to-hit sum up to affect your overall to-hit and how many hits you get?

Additional Questions
----------------------------------------------------------
3) Does BL result in your minion recieving more damage?
4) If jon were to give you either a MH [84X10] + 10 or a BoTH [73X10] + 10, which would you take? And why?

Thank you for your replies.

ok with BL you deal more damage not take more damage (.75) is max effect as for 1handed / 2handed weapons the dx pen is less on a 1handed weapon but remember the higher the base damage the more gentle the upgrade curve is, thus the MH is cheaper to get to x100 +100 than the BoTH so its a personal choice IMO.

2h for the win. with high enough dx it really dont matter(high lv)

I've yet to see a real comparison to be truthful.

1) In your opinion, are 1H weapons overpowered VS 2H weapons? If yes or no, why?
A: hardly, they do less damage as same stats.

2) How does dex, weapon base to-hit and weapon +to-hit sum up to affect your overall to-hit and how many hits you get?
A: more DX = chance at 2 hits, to hit for weapon and rest = chance at more hits

3) Does BL result in your minion recieving more damage?
A: no, this was changed a long time ago.

4) If jon were to give you either a MH [84X10] + 10 or a BoTH [73X10] + 10, which would you take? And why?
A: MH, simple, damage

Thanx for all the inputs. It has all been very helpful.

The to-hit modifier, as well as the damage modifier, is cheaper to upgrade for higher base-damage weapons. So even though 1-handed weapons are considered better for multiple hits, the bigger the weapon, the cheaper the + upgrade.

"even though 1-handed weapons are considered better for multiple hits, the bigger the weapon, the cheaper the + upgrade."

not so for the "big 4" weapons.

Vahilor, check out the perfectionist contest. I lot of work has gone into multiple attacks.

With an extra 25 pth on your 2 H weapon, you equal out the 50% base change.

"not so for the "big 4" weapons. "
-Big 4 meaning... THF, EXEC Sword, MH and BoNE?

Is perfectionist contest a thread?

Big 4 meaning BoNE, MH, ELS, and BTh

Adminedyit [Superheros] June 13 2006 8:15 PM EDT

ummm I don't think the BoTH is in the big 4 or the upgrade cost would be the same as a BoNE or MH

Tezmac June 13 2006 10:13 PM EDT

Pretty sure those are the big four with the same upgrade costs, BoNE is to ELS as MH is to BTh. Another vet care to weight in?

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] June 13 2006 11:00 PM EDT

if I've understood Jon correctly, all the big 4 Loch (err BoNE), Morg, ELS, n the lil ole misunderstood BTh have the same + upgrade cost. The damage costs are different however.

AdminJonathan June 13 2006 11:31 PM EDT

"The damage costs are different however."

Nope.

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] June 13 2006 11:56 PM EDT

WHAT dude. now that's interesting.

Flamey June 14 2006 1:22 AM EDT

ok guys, been said many times the 4 highest base damage items, BoTH is not one of them.

Blacksword of Nan Elmoth - 92
Morgul Hammer - 84
Executioner's Sword - 82
Elven Long Sword - 80 (i think)

so unless BoTH has a base damage higher than 80 its not the same as those four items.

also BoTH has a base damage of 73, Katana 74, Vorpal Blade 75.

Shadowsparkle [Jago] June 14 2006 3:42 AM EDT

The big 4 are indeed BoNE, MH, ELS and BTh, which all have the same upgrade costs.

Exec does not count to them. It is 2h and upgrade costs are higher.

Vaynard [Fees Dirt Cheap] June 14 2006 3:05 PM EDT

lol, an Exec has never been in the big four at all! The big 4 are, and have seemingly always been, BoNE, MH, ELS, and BoTH. And as Jon stated, their upgrade costs are all the same so it would cost the same amount to raise any of them to say x100+100.

As for 1H vs 2H weapons, it's hard to say, but I can talk just from my limited experience. i have a pretty big BoNE, 92x90+80. I like it, a lot. But it misses, a lot. If my opponent has more DX, or even the slightest UC, it seems to go and miss every other shot. I'll stalemate to someone with 200k DX because I can't hit them from their UC. Now, in cases like that I do wish I had an ELS to test out and see if I could nail those greasy punks, but I don't. But overall, against most teams more damage does seem like a big positive, especially when fighting ToE teams or teams with higher damage absorbing strategies. There is no better way to win than just busting through them.

But ultimately the call is yours. If you must know more specific information, look around on the forums or just test them out yourself. Good luck.
