Retiree Truc's IMHO Flame Magnet (in General)

I don't play anymore, but I still care. As a pre-teen I once read a story about an aliens' amazement at the complexity/inefficiency of our internal combustion engines. Slowly it was explained that the doohickey fixed the problem created by the widget which, of course, countered the imperfections of the what-cha-ma-call-it....etc... It strikes me that CB is much the same, which is fine if you've been playing regularily for a long time....you might actually crave another Band-Aid. A second point is that CB has always been a RTFM kind of community. God help you if you ask a question that was answered on page 43, section B3 of a Changelog post from CB1 which you should have googled by now you ignorant and lazy n00b. Combine these two thoughts and you get a place that's not exactly attractive to new players or those who play in spurts. I guess I'm saying that there always seems to be a search for a new wrinkle...perhaps what's needed is a good ironing.

What exactly is the meaning of this? I don't understand a definitive point of posting this, except that you think veterans should tell new players more things, instead of let them find out everything on their own.

For those who don't know RTM = Read the manual.

~Thanks drudge

Thoop: I thought of this when I was looking at the "supporter item" poll. There always seems to be an attitude that *adding* something is the only way to cure staleness.

I remember being very enthusiastic when CB was simpler. I remember intense interest when "chance to hit" was *removed*. I think the day IA's were *removed* was more fun than the day they were introduced.

Perhaps I'll just go back to the porch and whittle now..

(P.S. I can't help but chuckle at the contrast of our pics.)

it's "read the fine manual"

And Truck might have a point.

I tend to forgo my more BOFH (google it yourselves folks)'ish tendancies in chat here, since the game is by nature sparsely documented, or documented in a manner that rewards labor rather than desire. I won't refer the person to the wiki unless then question is really easy to find and it's the third or fourth question of that type. Glad to see you around Truck.

th00p July 12 2006 8:08 PM EDT

Truc: If you read my comment on that poll, I think new supporter items are being spawned a little too fast, and that we should have other ways to gain interest back into the game.

[Redneck RV] Truc July 12 2006 8:20 PM EDT

"...but new ideas should always be welcomed..."

Here's my idea: Determine what aspect of the game is the most confusing and/or complex and......drum roll....lose it!

Sure the game will be "flawed" for a while, but the veterans will have fun adjusting and new players will find the game friendlier.

[Redneck RV] Truc July 12 2006 8:31 PM EDT

OK, I really really tried not to do this, but let's break that down.

" If you read my comment on that poll..." sounds a bit like "RTM" to me, and
your interest building idea is to add yet another aspect to the game.

This is EXACTLY what I'm talking about.
1) I don't want to read the whole site before I say something out loud! It's just not any fun.
2) The "solution" isn't always *adding* something.

I honestly have never let any newb search through the forest of rules to get that one answer i could give him/her directly.

in that opinion i think you are wrong about more of us...

TheEverblacksky July 12 2006 9:14 PM EDT

the most confusing thing.... at least to most of us is UC haha

th00p July 12 2006 9:25 PM EDT

I understand UC perfectly...

protection? Mushu maybe? Or, maybe pork, the other blue/grey meat?

Just so folks know, Truc is, well, a legend, at last in my eyes. He was integral to making the game fun back when I started. I even think he may have given me a light crossbow (maybe that was Fark...forgive me...three hard consonants and a vowel -- it could have been anyone).

Also, this is the most I have seen Truc write...well...ever. For that reason, I read it and read it closely.

I just realized that these "blasts from the past" are why I'm still here. Truc and NSFY just about sum it up for me. I laugh out loud when I get to (yes, GET TO!) see one of their posts (Truc, it's been way too long).
