I could put this in off topic i guess but i decided to put it here since i figured i would help compensate whoever was able to help me.
All im looking for is a codec to download for windows media player or some free player that i can use to play .avi files or anything i can use to convert .avi files to .mpg files that i can watch.
So pretty much just any free way that you can help me in the end watch something that starts as a .avi i dont care just as long as its free.
Also im running windows xp, and i have dsl so i can download anything thats really neccessary, if you have any other questions just ask them.
And the money i can send 100k to whoever has the idea that i can use, and i can send 10k to anyone else who has a good idea that i just dont use for whatever reason so that way there aren't people who have a good idea but just doesn't work as well, just so that way no ones time is really wasted.

Doesn't windows media player play AVI files anyway? I'm sure it used to. If not go to the updates and you should be able to find the codec.

Follow the link it gives you a full run down on codecs and finding the right one for your player. And keep the cash for something useful!! Or give it to anyone else who posts after me :)
Best of luck!!!
K-Lite Codec Pack works with most common formats and it's easy to install. There are others at www.free-codecs.com but the large ones get tricky. Installing too many codecs can cause problems with windows media player so it is recommended that you only install the ones you need, but we don't always know that so a codec pack is convenient.
You could get VLC media player at www.videolan.org , it's currently one of the best media player out there, it has almost all codecs needed to watch various files, .avi, .mpeg, .mkv, .ogg, .ogm, etc. (codecs already included in the media player)
For Windows media player, I usually just install divx, free version, and then xvid. That's about it, although there are some latest avi that I couldn't watch in wmp, because they used H.264 mpeg-4 codec. I really wouldn't want to install codec pack, especially the ones that are hard to uninstall.

Theres the site read up on it and stuff. When I needed to play Avi files I was told to download this and so far it hasn't let me down.

Thanks !! :)
btw, the website for divx is www.divx.com and xvid is www.xvid.org , those 2 are pretty much the only codecs you have to install to play .avi file in WMP, at least for playing the video. (audio problems will be a bit more tricky since there are some weird codecs to install)

An .avi file is just a container to hold the audio or video. There are different codecs to compress the data inside the file.
Click here to download an analysis tool that will tell you what codec is used in your file.
Click here to find who makes the codec and where download it.
some .avi are Divx format windows media player and all other players don't run divx.
Trying to convert .avi divx to .mpg (some with AAC audio, or even better quality) require even more codecs.
Trying to burn those movies is even more horrible.
I tried, but never succeeded.
And that was with nero 6 with all the codecs installed.
That will cost you a bundle though. (try to google for it, or hunt for iso's).
Anyway download the divx codecs from www.divx.com. And read up
from that site for converting software.

Henk, that is most likely due to most divx avi movies being encoded with surround sound, and not even adobe premiere pro can handle with the recoding of it...
