CB on your mobile. (in Off-topic)

AdminG Beee October 6 2006 6:58 AM EDT

Never done it before but I'm looking to purchase a new mobile that will allow me to play CB on the move. There are many price plans on the market and I'm not sure what would be the best as I don't know what to expect as a "typical download" from CB.

I know some folks use their phones to play CB - what's the typical download to expect?
Would 10MB / month usage be in the ballpark for text based dls only?

I read somewhere that 10MB is roughly equivelant to 1,000 pages viewed but don't know if that's accurate or not?

Rubberduck[T] [Hell Blenders] October 6 2006 7:02 AM EDT

Sorry, no idea about phones just wanted to say you get through more than enough BA anyway ;)

QBJohnnywas October 6 2006 7:12 AM EDT

CB on your mobile....god, can you imagine the annual CB get together. Everyone sat in silence in some pub somewhere heads down while they burn BA.

1000 pages? Wouldn't that be the equivalent of about 6 sets of BA?

QBJohnnywas October 6 2006 7:13 AM EDT

Of course I'm not coming at that from a techie point of view, simply that each play by play is a new page...

QBJohnnywas October 6 2006 7:17 AM EDT

but if you're talking a page being a site, then if you only visit CB once a day I'm told you're only using .5 meg a month...that's from a techie IT bod sat next to me right now!

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] October 6 2006 7:33 AM EDT

:D Downing pints while burning BA! :D

Mrs Beee October 6 2006 7:52 AM EDT

Let me set the record straight. I have broken my mobile so need a new one. G thinks because it is his birthday in 12 days that he should get the new phone. He also suggests getting one with internet access to play CB because I was having withdrawal symptoms during our holidays in the summer. I made him book a caravan site that I knew had internet access half way through the holiday but I was still jumpy. I need access during the day because at lunchtime the internet cafe I use is full of high school kids and I sometimes can't get on. I think we should have a poll to decide whether G should get the phone or myself.

QBJohnnywas October 6 2006 8:00 AM EDT

Sorry, G, but you've got to keep Mrs happy. Them's the rules!

QBJohnnywas October 6 2006 8:00 AM EDT

On the other hand...buy two!

AdminG Beee October 6 2006 8:02 AM EDT

1,000 pages would get us through the vast majority of downtime. I'm also assuming that's 1,000 complete text pages and that the CB fight screen, with the battle stats off, wouldn't quite qualify as a full text page so I'd get more.

Of course when we're on vacation and away from the PC (/me shudders at the thought of time away) then we couldn't use it 24/7, but at least whacky time wouldn't be missed.

I say "we" because it's actually wifey's phone that needs replaced. I may just try and claim it for myself though if I can get away with it. :)

AdminG Beee October 6 2006 8:08 AM EDT

OK, so it took me 10 mins to post my last thread and I didn't see the previous one from Mrs B. We're not having a poll - I know how that would work out!

2 sounds like a good idea Johnny but that has already been booted into touch via CM an hour ago... lol.

Don't you just love the internet age - soon we won't have to talk to each other at all, now if I could just get my kids playing... lol

CM to daughter: time for bed, and clear up your room :)

Anyway, back on topic: What would I expect a typical usage to be. I think Ranger uses his mobile to play a lot, anyone else??

Kong Ming October 6 2006 8:18 AM EDT

What does the mobile phone need in order to play CB?

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] October 6 2006 9:23 AM EDT

G, That's the way the world is going...

News atm is the Education department wants to start phasing out coursework from subjects (starting with mathematics...) as it's too easy to cheat (go get all the info you need from the internet) and coursework is starting to mean nothing...

AdminG Beee October 6 2006 9:47 AM EDT

That's already agreed in Scotland. Don't worry, England will catch up eventually... ;)

bartjan October 6 2006 10:03 AM EDT

T-Mobile has an unlimited Internet plan for £7.50 per month (on top of the regular plan). Dunno the details (except that it's about 50% more expensive than for Dutch users ;), but with this you at least won't have to worry about any limits ;)

krasko October 6 2006 1:27 PM EDT

I used my nokia 9300 for playing CB a year ago. Here in Bulgaria the GPRS connection isnt so good but i was loading the pages as fast as 4-5 seconds. As far as i can remember my GPRS transfer didnt reached more than 20-25-30MB.I have also played CB from other phone but i can not remember it at the moment.

AdminJonathan October 6 2006 3:51 PM EDT

I think the essentials do work with a Treo. Ranger would probably know about that.

Other phones might work, but try it out before buying it: CB is fairly picky, and debugging javascript for a phone I don't own makes me grumpy. :)

And get something without per-MB fees if possible. CB is very lightweight with play-by-play off, but still, that's so barbaric!

AdminG Beee October 6 2006 4:02 PM EDT

Sony Ericsson K800i will be the phone of choice but unfortunately there don't appear to be many options regarding providers and avoiding a monthly usage allowance. I just need to figure out what would be the most suitable package both from a cost and usage perspective. A trip to the high street will sort me out with all the details but it's always better to at least know a little so that I'm not totally conned by the sales folks.
I like the Sony for a whole host of reasons and not just internet access (CB works fine, at least on sign-up page and browsing forums from the little time I had to check). Built in 3.2MP camera with flash is nice and the images are best in class from a mobile phone this side of Japan. FM radio is kinda cool too and means I can keep up with the football match whilst on the golf course :)

Come to think of it I'll prolly use the phone for pretty much everything_except_phone calls.

bartjan October 6 2006 4:15 PM EDT

I have a Nokia 7710. It comes with an Opera browser, like most Symbian/Nokia phones. I tried playing CB on it a few times, but only on very slow networks. It did work, but unfortunately its hand writing recognition (it's a phone with a touch screen, operated with a stylus) wasn't good enough to be able to just draw over the botchecks ;)

I'm still mad at T-Mobile for not listing this model on their list of allowed phones for their unlimited Web-n-walk service :(

AdminG Beee October 6 2006 4:26 PM EDT

Oh, that's a good point!
I don't know what a bot check looks like. I'll need to check that out before purchasing.

Karmic Mishap [Soup Ream] October 6 2006 5:24 PM EDT

The Sidekick definitely can't do it, doesn't have enough RAM to handle all the Javascript.

AdminG Beee October 10 2006 10:27 AM EDT

Purchased the Ericsson K800i based on a quick look at CB from a colleagues phone. My mistake was only viewing the front page, wiki and forum boards and not the actual home page whilst logged in.

Problem I have is that the front page starts to load the minion detail on the right side of the browser as normal (on my pc for example) but when it tries to load the CB sidebar I get a blank page only on the phone. Nothing I do can make the blank page go away.
Looks like this phone doesn't work well with the CB interface. :( and it's back to the shop we go for a 14 day money back refund unless anyone can give me advice on how to set this up.

I'm still going to try and get another phone that I can use if I can't get this one to work...

AdminG Beee October 10 2006 10:52 AM EDT

Yup, it's 100% the problem with the sidebar that's causing the site to fail on the phone.

If I navigate to http://www.carnageblender.com/opponents-favorites.tcl and click the fight link from there (which effectively disables the sidebar) then all is well. I have to use the back button before selecting another person to fight, but at least I can do it. Not really a sustainable option though and means I'm visiting twice as many pages as I should need to.

Now, Jon you said it made you "grumpy" to debug problems for a phone you don't own. Just how "grumpy" does it make you and if I said you were looking great today and all your posts have made me smile would it help you solve my problem..? ;)

Seriously - is there a way around this for me, or does anyone know a more effective way of disabling the sidebar?

AdminJonathan October 10 2006 11:49 AM EDT

the sidebar has the most js of anything in the system, it would be horrible to try to figure out what was breaking your phone (probably multiple things)

a more feasible option might be to have some kind of minimal page designed for phone users that just has a fight list

AdminG Beee October 10 2006 12:08 PM EDT

When using the phone for CB all I'm interested in (and I suspect I'm not alone) is feeding my BA burn addiction.

A simple fight page would be the perfect solution not to mention another carrot to dangle in front of the new and existing users. I'd love it!

AdminG Beee October 10 2006 12:18 PM EDT

Of course, buying BA is impossible without the sidebar. :(

Unless someone knows different...?

QBOddBird October 10 2006 12:20 PM EDT

Just add the link to the new fight page, and instead of opening in cbmain, open in that page?

SNK3R October 10 2006 1:08 PM EDT

G Beee, buying BA is possible without the sidebar. I helped Mikel with the exact problem in this thread. Check out my response half-way through.

QBRanger October 10 2006 2:08 PM EDT

I use the Cingular 8125.

Excellent web browsing. Frames capability. Bluetooth and wifi enabled.

And SNK is correct in the link you can use to buy BA since the "get more BA" link does not work on most mobiles.

Verifex was the first person to tell that link to me, so kudos should go to him as well.

AdminG Beee October 10 2006 2:41 PM EDT

That's great and works fine SNK, thanks.

So my only problem now is the fact that I have to hit "back" after every fight before I can fight my next opponent.

All in all I have a rather cumbersome but effective workaround to all of the issues I've raised. Cool, thanks for the help folks:)

bartjan October 10 2006 3:02 PM EDT

If the phone supports iframes, you could perhaps make something like opponent1.html through opponentX.html where each page has a short menu on top linking to all the other pages, and beneath it an iframe including the fight page?
No (extra) javascript is needed, and you even can add extra links like the buy BA one and layout it anyhow you like.

Zoglog[T] [big bucks] October 10 2006 3:15 PM EDT

/me (in japanese style voice) says "Hello BCMoto".

I couldn't help it :P

AdminQBVerifex October 13 2006 4:37 PM EDT

Do you guys who use mobile phones, want chat on your phone? Or.. uhh is that even possible?

AdminG Beee October 13 2006 4:48 PM EDT

I wouldn't use CB chat on my phone.
