Happy Valentine's Day (in Off-topic)

Flamey February 13 2007 3:06 PM EST

... From Australia. :)

7 AM here on the 14th of February.

Waste of a day, IMO, making us spend so much cash like that ;)

TheHatchetman February 13 2007 3:08 PM EST

Just an observation, but older men who've been married for many years usually love this day... anything for an excuse, eh?

QBsutekh137 February 13 2007 3:10 PM EST

"making us..." ?

If you don't want to spend, don't spend. No one is "making" you do anything. *smile*

Flamey February 13 2007 3:10 PM EST

LOL.

Flamey February 13 2007 3:12 PM EST

I'm pretty sure she wouldn't be around after that. :)

QBOddBird February 13 2007 3:39 PM EST

I love this day. She *expects* me to earn brownie points with her. ^_^

QBsutekh137 February 13 2007 3:56 PM EST

If she wouldn't be around after that, and if you're really spending money only because you are "made" to, one might wonder why you are together in the first place. *grin*

In other words, I guess I am asking, "Is Valentine's Day the only reason you do nice things for your significant other, and is it the only day your significant other expects such?" If Valentine's Day didn't exist, nothing would be done, and furthermore, no one would ever _expect_ anything to be done?

It would appear that commercialism truly has won, if it has shifted very many to that mindset!

QBOddBird February 13 2007 4:18 PM EST

As far as the expectations part goes, no, my girl doesn't *expect* me to get her a thing any other time of the year. I do nonetheless, and she loves it, and she would like me to continue to do so, but this is the one day of the year when she knows something big is coming and can look forward to it. (aside from her birthday, christmas, anniversary, etc.)

But I mean when she knows something of the romantic sort is coming.

Maybe that explains my previous post a little better, sutekh?

QBsutekh137 February 13 2007 5:19 PM EST

Sure, OB...but I wasn't talking to you. *smile* I was responding to Flamey. *smile*

RedWolf February 13 2007 5:36 PM EST

Valentine's Day... bah humbug

QBOddBird February 13 2007 5:57 PM EST

Sorry, I keep forgetting how few other people realize that the world revolves around me...

"Waste of a day, IMO, making us spend so much cash like that ;)"

*coughCHRISTMAScough*

Wow, terrible cold. Anyways, Valentine's Day seems like a pointless day to me, too. Mind you, I don't have anybody special in my life yet but... *shrug*

AdminG Beee February 13 2007 6:15 PM EST

My kids fleeced me out of some cash to make a card for wifey.

I know I could have spent that at the shops but I like to see the cash stay in the family where possible :)

Wasp February 13 2007 6:37 PM EST

Valentine's day is a bit hyped up for the wrong reasons. The shops have drummed it into our heads that we have to buy cards and what-not other wise you are a cheap skate. A bunch of flowers, a little cuddly bear and a nice evening meal together is always nice on Valentine's day. Saying that, it's nice on any day.

What day could be celebrated next?

Thraklight Resonance February 13 2007 6:37 PM EST

Pick me, Oddbird! Pick me and give me to your girlfriend! I'm soooo much cuter than a dozen roses, and I'll still be around to play with your children when they're little!

Tezmac February 13 2007 6:42 PM EST

"What day could be celebrated next?"

There is a day for the gents that is indeed much cheaper, but it's title isn't exactly PG. :O)

Thraklight Resonance February 13 2007 6:51 PM EST

And if the cute puppy isn't your thing, you could go with the ugly dog and ugly cat combo.

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] February 13 2007 7:00 PM EST

"There is a day for the gents that is indeed much cheaper, but it's title isn't exactly PG. :O)"

I know that day Tez! ;) Unfortuntley for me, Claire doesn't celebrate it. :(

QBOddBird February 13 2007 8:41 PM EST

thrak - I got her one of those 'Sleeping 6 month old Petzzzz' puppies, that's part of her V-day gift. =P Won't play with any children, but it is cute...

Flamey February 14 2007 2:54 AM EST

Notice the wink at the end? Signifies I was kidding, at least in that sentence :)

But really, In my view, I think V-Day could be a waste of a day. My "Significant Other" (I love that term :] ) Told me not to get her anything, but I could tell she wanted a little something, I believe if I got her nothing, I don't think she would mind.

On the card, a little bit of it read.. "I find this kinda weird. 'Cause it's like, why can't everyday be St. Valentine's Day?

"It should be everyday that I let you know that I'm glad to have met you and that I love having you around"

--
Having read that, I'm pretty sure she's worth spending a little bit of money on her.

come to think of it, If it wasn't V-Day, nothing would have happened, I think it's like your Anniversary or birthday or something, you're not celebrating because you're made to, or forced to, you are, because you want to.

I want to. (Hopefully this post made a little sense, because I feel like I've contradicted myself)

Proof that it's not all about the money:

10. The Gift Of Forethought

You can hit one out of the ballpark!

She's a confident and competent woman who knows to ask for what she wants. But the most romantic thing to her? Not having to ask for a romantic Valentine's Day gift.

"Yikes," you think. "I've struck out with every gift I've bought her since we met!"

You know why? You didn't know it was a really good idea to do the asking yourself -- querying her mother, maybe your mother, and, especially, her best girlfriend to find what your valentine would really love this year.

Think of it as a gift to yourself: remember to ask. Just not her, OK? (if you don't know who to ask, we can't help you)

"I like giving gifts. It's a great way of saying I love you this many dollars worth." -- Michael Scott(Steve Corell), from The Office

"Diamonds:Because love equals money" -- Billboard on The Simpsons.

One year my dad gave my mom a diamond bracelet for their anniversary. My mom thought it was one of the best gifts she'd ever gotten. My dad told me that he didn't really have any ideas, so he just spent a lot of money. -- True story

I can't wait for the 14th of March....

"You really think that Bast would like to see Johnnywas perform a pole dance for Valentine's Day? How am I going to get him to perform a pole dance? Oh, wait, what am I thinking? This is probably going to be easy."

QBBast [Hidden Agenda] February 14 2007 10:25 AM EST

Pft. JW knows how to make a girl smile, he's already sent me these:

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] February 14 2007 10:44 AM EST

The pole dance just makes me smile! ;)

QBJohnnywas February 14 2007 10:46 AM EST

GL's seen my pole dancing skills. Don't ask.

AdminQBGentlemanLoser [{END}] February 14 2007 1:20 PM EST

Down to the boxers! ;)

QBOddBird February 14 2007 11:37 PM EST

Oh yeah. Valentine's Day is a GREAT day. Best of the year.

Killed my forging though! I wasn't able to get on alllllll day!

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] February 15 2007 3:10 AM EST

I baked cookies, one of them was the size of pancake almost, and had a brown sugar heart in the top...

QBBarzooMonkey February 15 2007 9:35 AM EST

I shoveled the walk. Twice. It needs it again this morning already. Luckily, a neighbor with a snowblower did the driveway. Twice. Then a snow plow came by at 1 in the morning. It needs it again now. To get to work this morning, I just put it in 4-wheel drive and "punch(ed) it, Chewy!". Oh, and the temperature outside right now is negative 3 degrees Fahrenheit. That's negative 19 degrees Celsius. And that's before the wind chill.

Mrs. Monkey baked me a chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. It was delicious. I owe her a night out to dinner when the snow stops.

Happy Valentine's Day? ;)

QBJohnnywas February 15 2007 9:57 AM EST

I told Jo that I was working, but I'd booked the day off in reality and suprised her at work with a dozen sunflowers (she hates roses). Then I cooked a meal in the evening. We ate too much and drank a bit too much champagne and were both fast asleep at 1030pm.

Ah romance! ;)

QBOddBird February 17 2007 10:43 AM EST

Aw Wizzy, you sweetheart you ;)
