Re-Poll "Inspecting others' equipment" (in General)

[T]Vestax March 8 2007 12:13 PM EST

I'm sure that plenty of us have thought of other options we would rather vote for in the "Inspecting others' equipment" poll. Personally, I would like to see a "for mentors and clanmates" option and I bet sutekh would rather vote for a "allow user to toggle" option.

Aside from that the vote seems awfully close. A large minority is against it and it is the type of feature that will generate constant complaining. I feel a compromise is in order.

Does anybody else agree that a re-poll is in order?

QBPit Spawn [Abyssal Specters] March 8 2007 12:59 PM EST

yea, i would agree that the best option is the toggle, allowing other users to see you equip or not

Eurynome Bartleby [Bartleby's] March 8 2007 12:59 PM EST

I can't help but agree, for the reason you mentioned:

''...generate constant complaining.''

It is also my opinion that a re-poll is necessary, or at least a thread to discuss the possible options related to ''Inspecting others' equipment''. It is not a yes/no question.

QBsutekh137 March 8 2007 1:06 PM EST

"Allow user to toggle" works for everyone, doesn't it? Clans, mentors/mentees, folks who want to show stats, folks who don't. If you want your clan members and mentees to see, you have to let everyone see. Especially with the mentee example, would you really want only YOUR mentees to see? I would think a good mentor wouldn't mind sharing with all new players -- no need for segmentation on that front.

As far as clan linkages, well, you know how I feel about clans. *smile* If you want secrecy in that case, leave the toggle off and use clan messages to send information about...

Mentor and clan linkages bring a whole different set of data into play (walking the mentor tables and clan tables and THEN deciding whether or not to show). A pure user toggle is a single check from already-gathered data, and then call the code to flesh out the already-gathered (I assume) details on the display.

I see your point, and the linkages you mention are good ones, but would that start a whole lot of customizing? Like "everyone but so-and-so, people forging for me, people I am forging for, people renting items from me...", etc. etc. I just figured a single toggle would be easier to implement (thereby being more likely to GET implemented...) *smile*

I'm not going to rubbish your idea Vestax although I will point out that a statement of yours is ludicrous in trying to justify your views.

"A large minority is against it"
I don't see how they can be classed as a minority when the majority of votes have been cast in favour of what we currently have.
Your statement may have been reasonable if most votes had gone to either of the other options but the 'keep it' option still had a large vote for it.

QBRanger March 8 2007 1:24 PM EST

Zog is 100% right. How can you say a majority is against it when the voting speaks volumnes and contradicts your entire rant?

Eurynome Bartleby [Bartleby's] March 8 2007 1:26 PM EST

''A large minority''.

AdminG Beee March 8 2007 1:39 PM EST

More than 50% are against both options:

That is the way it should stay, has 59% against.
Show me the levels too (and show them mine), has 55% against.

Cool, 114% of the people can't agree. I love polls !

QBsutekh137 March 8 2007 1:46 PM EST

I just figured Vestax was trying to state that there is a fairly even split.

This isn't a non-run-off vote election for Presidency or something, folks. If the poll shows a split of opinion, we can gather ideas for a compromise.

Vestax is stating that two "compromise" ideas would be:

1. Allow inspection, but via a user-controlled toggle -- "Allow ALL others to see my details."
2. Allow inspection, but via a user-controlled toggle -- "Allow only CLAN members and those with a mentor relationship to see my details."

For both 1 and 2, the "don't allow" folks have it very, very simple -- they do nothing.

I'm for number 1, because it has no exceptions. It is a simple, binary choice.

I can see the allure of choice 2, I just see it as an instantly-wide-open flood gate for the option, causing folks to clamor for a bunch of other relationships for which to turn details off and on.

That pretty much summarizes my thoughts on the issue and on what Vestax was trying to get across with his OP.

QBJohnnywas March 8 2007 1:50 PM EST

'Keep it simple stupid' is pretty much always the best option, especially when things are as close as this.

QBsutekh137 March 8 2007 2:00 PM EST

Sounds like Johnny wants a KISS! *smile*

:P

AdminNightStrike March 8 2007 4:16 PM EST

I am assuming that if you toggle your own off, that you cannot therefore see others stats? That would be fair, after all.

That further leads to people turning it on for a moment, doing their investigations, and turning it off.

I honestly don't see why people are so secretive about things. Heck, I try to help people find ways to beat me, let alone divulge all of my "private parts". What harm is it? I've alwayas taken a very different stance off the battlefield than on it. Off, we're all working together for relatively similar goals -- why not help out? On -- well, it's already decided before you start, so it doesn't really matter.

QBsutekh137 March 8 2007 6:28 PM EST

No, the toggle would be "Allow others to see my details". That is a one-way street, and is a pure "opt-in" phenomenon. No side-effects, no ramifications, no hassle.

A "Let me see other people's details and then they can see mine too." would be just about the silliest, most non-intuitive thing I have ever heard of. *smile* No option should force something from the _other_ person. Options only affect _my_ preferences.

AdminNightStrike March 8 2007 6:52 PM EST

"would be just about the silliest, most non-intuitive thing I have ever heard of"

So it's true, you DO ignore yourself!

AdminNightStrike March 8 2007 6:53 PM EST

Oh, right, I forgot... "*smile*"

QBsutekh137 March 8 2007 8:00 PM EST

I'm also a narcissist, so that dove-tails nicely.

[T]Vestax March 8 2007 11:25 PM EST

Zoglog, I simply misread the poll. I thought the public enchantment levels option was winning. Forgive me if that caused confusion.
