Elven Long Sword! (in General)

BootyGod March 10 2007 12:58 PM EST

It needs a change. Desperately. More then any other rare weapon, because none of you can think of any reason to use it. Why use ELS when VB or Morg is right there?

So, I'm calling all of you CB vets out. Find a way to make it useful. Really useful. Useful enough to compete in a world of leech and snicker-snack.

My ideas=
Magic Resistance
Increase in DX.
Increase in Skill.
Increase in ED's cast on it.

Some basic ideas. But I do wish to stay clear of making it a weapon for enchanters and walls.

So get back to me CB.

QBRanger March 10 2007 12:59 PM EST

Elven sword, so it should give dex bonus like all elven gear.

th00p March 10 2007 1:00 PM EST

So an ELB should do the same? I think not.

tscm March 10 2007 1:24 PM EST

Since Elven stuff are supposed to be so magical, why not let it hit in one round of ranged attack, right before mellee? So The regular fighting happens in ranged with bow and xbows and slings and DD for the first 3 rounds, and on the 4th, the ELS can act as a ranged weapon. Then after ranged, it returns to a normal sword and fights in mellee.

BootyGod March 10 2007 1:26 PM EST

Not a bad idea, but doesn't that completely neutralize the point of archery?

Seems like a weird idea, unless you also boosted the base damage significantly.

QBBarzooMonkey March 10 2007 1:34 PM EST

A boost to skills would make sense, based on an "Elven Magic" kind of idea, but make it like an amulet of focus, with both pros and cons associated with the boost, so as to not let it be to powerful, yet make for another interesting choice.

"Well, why not just use an AoF?", Because then one could use a different amulat at the same time, for even wider strat choices.

th00p March 10 2007 1:37 PM EST

A straight boost to DX and skills as the other Elven gear would not be fair. Mages would equip the ELS and get free bonuses to their evasion. A 5 or 10% DD penalty would make this much more fair to the tanks out there who are still struggling to hit high evasion teams, even with high NW weapons. Pit and I discussed this and felt a small bonus, about 5%, should be added, and about 1/10th the + also, so that even newbs with low NW can have some bonus, and all the rich vets out there can only get to +15% before the upgrade costs get out of control. Just a thought though.

tscm March 10 2007 1:38 PM EST

Well Maybe instead of cutting out the archery idea, the ELS can just do a magical attack, like a DD spell, and not interfering with it's ranged weapons and skills.

Ranged Round 1: uses ranged weapons only

Ranged Round 2: uses ranged weapons only

Ranged Round 3: uses ranged weapons only

Ranged Round 4: uses ranged weapons, and the ELS fires (like a DD spell?)

Mellee Round 1: normal

AdminLamuness March 10 2007 1:38 PM EST

Too many things happening in range these days. Being a magical weapon doesn't necessarily mean it has to be able to do damage in certain rounds.

Consider this, some magical weapons are magical because they have an enchantment casted on them so that they will never dull (always remain sharp). The ELS could have something to that effect.

tscm March 10 2007 1:41 PM EST

Well to counter mages and enchanters, maybe the ELS spell has to be effective with ST and DX only. This doesn't have to include Haste and Giant Strength.

So if the minions have GS and Haste effecting them, the ELS spell would only be effected by the ST and DX that is trained to the minion. If you can understand what I'm trying to say.

Trashcan March 10 2007 1:43 PM EST

Instead of allowing it to attack in ranged, how about a quickdraw ability? Allow it to be drawn the first round of melee and used instead of waiting one melee round? Make those archers choose, 5 extra base damage and 1 extra hit, or the AC reduction from the VB.

tscm March 10 2007 8:54 PM EST

Ohhh now I know what you were all saying about the 4th round canceling archery... Sorry, I had a brain fart. =/ I meant the ELS would fire on the 3rd round, not 4th.

GO PATS March 10 2007 9:09 PM EST

Well, about the ELS (with DX or Skill Bonus) being unfair because Mages could use it for free skill gain. Well... (and yes, I know this isn't D&D) in D&D elven mages (any elf actually) can use a longsword proficiently... so, being a longsword and being elven, I don't see why a mage couldn't wield one, if he could wield any weapon, a longsword made by the elves would be about the best you could hope for... so anyway... I think what I was trying to say was that a DX or Skill Bonus (not per + because +191 would be a bit much...) would be acceptable to me, making the weapon much more useful and in demand... I just don't know how the bonus would work, maybe a set 10% bonus to DX and Skills? I don't think that would be too insanely overpowering. Even lowering the damage to a little under a katana, x 70 maybe? I think people would still work them into their strats somehow...

Yes to ELS with DX Bonus.

Dark Dreky March 10 2007 10:05 PM EST

Good point Moosh. In D&D (yeah, this is CB but D&D RULES! ) mages can use a longsword. Furthermore, it is quite common for elven warriors to mix both physical prowess and magical talent. What I'm trying to say is, wizards and warriors could use them... so why not have both of them benefit from it?

I think the best way to incorporate a bonus into the ELS is to make it skill based. Or if you do a flat-rate bonus to DX, have it apply to DD too... but maybe a smaller bonus. Because maybe the sword is infused with elven magic that users can draw magical power from... I figured I'd throw in a reason before every says how stupid my idea is.

Basically, if you improve it... don't let it be just for tanks. Skill bonuses seem to be the best idea out there.

Slashundhack [We Forge Our Own Stuff] March 11 2007 12:09 AM EST

Why not leave it but when you wear all elven gear you get a good overall bonus.Need sword ,armor ,shield, boots ,cloak, gloves and helm . Or dump the shield and have a dual wield feature.I'd really like two swords.Or I guess you could just make it a short sword and make the wielder an archer ie: best sword for archers ??

GO PATS March 11 2007 12:50 AM EST

Mehhh... I dunno about that + % to DD, Dreky, the skills part will help mages, as most use Evasion (and some Junction which is a sick EXP pit)... I'm not against another +%DD Item, dunno what it would be, an amulet would work... But I just think the Elven Long Sword should follow the suit of the Elven gear...
