NIce to see the past is remembered (in General)

holocaust cloak [6] (+13) (Cloak of the Istari -- name expires in 11 months 20 days) for sale by dudemus

On behalf of all those who lost family members in the real holocaust, thank you for remembering the past.

I had thought that named like this were not allowed IE CB1s COBF, but I apparently was mistaken after CMIng admins about this.

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] May 28 2007 7:25 PM EDT

It's a reference to a magic item from a book/movie, the word holocaust isn't always referring to the specific act of genocide committed in WWII...

It was bad enough that the name got changed originally here, someone already had a CoBF with that name there...I'd rather see a thread about the genocide happening today than pissy complaints about named items.

SBW May 28 2007 7:25 PM EDT

It rather offends me as well. On this topic, I agree 100% with Ranger. Wouldn't hurt anyone to change the name woud it...

SaintMichael May 28 2007 7:28 PM EDT

I don't think it's fair to jump to the conclusion that he's speaking of Hitler's holocaust. He could very well be speaking of nuclear holocaust. I'd ask him directly and then complain. The is no excuse if he's speaking of the Jewish Holocaust, but I'm not sure he is.

QBRanger May 28 2007 7:29 PM EDT

Novice,

Some words have very bad meanings associated with them. Nazi is one. The word is not a bad one, it is just its connotation which is the problem.

If you think I am being "pissy" then let us see how you feel if you lose 50% of your family in a genocide. Until then, your opinion does not matter much to me.

SBW May 28 2007 7:29 PM EDT

It doesn't matter what he is referring to. If the name itself offends people, what could it hurt to change it?

JaggedFel311 May 28 2007 7:39 PM EDT

Or it could be referring to the X-Men universe super-villain, Holocaust. But whatever, the vocal minority has spoken, down with the name!

And by the way, I don't really care one way or another, the name doesn't bother me... do as you will.

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] May 28 2007 7:41 PM EDT

Were I not the bastard son of a bastard son, I might be able to list off the names of my own people who were killed. All of that is irrelevant, there isn't a single reason the word holocaust should be always connected with The Holocaust.

SBW May 28 2007 7:42 PM EDT

If it bothers someone... what could it hurt to just change it for him? man... heck i'll offer 100k payment for someone to change the name please. Not for me, for ranger. Yeah yeah... i'm stingy about my money because I'm restarting and all.. but this is really important to Ranger.. heck, i'll put 200k in.

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] May 28 2007 7:51 PM EDT

I'm offended by your user image SBW, heck the name of the image isn't even PG...

Ranger asked the admins if there was a rule that applied to the items name, and was told there wasn't. He easily could have left it at that, and NEVER looked at that char page again. He didn't, he chose to start a thread about it, and I for one, am offended. Censorship is bad enough, but censorship on this level scares me.

SBW May 28 2007 7:56 PM EDT

There, took it off because somebody was offended. Now... I think the same should be done for Ranger.

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] May 28 2007 8:01 PM EDT

*slaps forehead in disgust*...sorry for pointing my finger your way SBW, your user image was just an example of how silly it is to offended by words...
If this is the road we're headed down just ! me already...

SBW May 28 2007 8:04 PM EDT

why does it still show that pic? o.O i changed it to an audi r8...

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] May 28 2007 8:05 PM EDT

S Beee W, your username offends me. Obviously everyone can't make everyone else happy.

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] May 28 2007 8:06 PM EDT

hold down shift and hit F5 (or CTRL-R)

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] May 28 2007 8:07 PM EDT

...and as a fat (well I'm working on it again at least) person, Jug's name offends me deeply...I think I'll go cry.

SBW May 28 2007 8:10 PM EDT

don't digress. this is a world-wide offending word... I'm sure if there was a genocide where people were killed in bubblewrap, that would be an offending word. However, this has not yet happened...

[RX3]Cotillion May 28 2007 8:13 PM EDT

F E R O C I O U S ! ! !

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] May 28 2007 8:15 PM EDT

No, but there are (as we sit here idly gibbering about the use of a word) people being slaughtered right now, and allowing the censorship of words that make us feel bad somehow disturbs me...We SHOULD FEEL BAD, we should awaken every morning to the taste of bitter bile boiling out of our guts and be driven by that burning to change the way we live. Words are not our enemy, we are our enemy.

[RX3]Cotillion May 28 2007 8:16 PM EDT

And uh... to kinda stay on topic, my ancestors, Armenians, experienced genocide. It doesn't offend me at all, but then again, I'm not Ranger. :)

Eurynome Bartleby [Bartleby's] May 28 2007 8:18 PM EDT

If we had to remove from our online vocabulary all words that have at one point of another made any kind of harm to someone...

All sentences would be one word long, don't you think?

SBW May 28 2007 8:18 PM EDT

People are offended more than others. Please just change it for Ranger.

[RX3]Cotillion May 28 2007 8:24 PM EDT

Why should WE feel bad?... We should feel sorry and have compassion for any kind of lost life, but we shouldn't feel BAD. If we were stuck in a memory of being in a hospital, holding a loved ones hand, while they died, and were always sad, I think life would be pretty crappy... I mean, I agree with you in the fact that we shouldn't ever forget tragedies, but is there a point of parading around our memories? Some people take more things to heart more than others, but I think we could respect that. I see it as being polite, more than censorship.

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] May 28 2007 8:24 PM EDT

That's stupid and immature. Why should someone have to spend their money to suit the needs of another, especially when it's such a trivial thing?

[RX3]Cotillion May 28 2007 8:27 PM EDT

Who has to spend money? ... and if you were black, and I were to have a picture of a KKK symbol or some crap written in the dirt on the back of my cars window, you wouldn't want me to wipe it off?

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] May 28 2007 8:27 PM EDT

"Holocaust Cloak - From The Princess Bride"

"What I wouldn't give for a Holocaust Cloak!" - Westley, The Princess Bride

"A Holocaust Cloak is by all appearances a standard, full-body covering cloak with a hood. However, it has been magically prepared to be almost totally resistant to fire for a time, as well as empower the user with an impressive ability. Once donned, the cloak can be set alight and it will immediately catch and begin to blaze with a bright reddish orange flame - almost the same color and heat as the breath of a Red Dragon. Any who attack the wearer of the cloak must save versus magic or suffer 2d8 points of damage from the flames, and any weapon they strike with must make a saving throw or be damaged as well!"

- proof that Novice was right and the cloak isn't meant to be offending.

SBW May 28 2007 8:28 PM EDT

admins could change the name...

Eurynome Bartleby [Bartleby's] May 28 2007 8:29 PM EDT

The way I see it, if I owned the cloak, i'd change the name. I' d do it for the person who feels bad about seeing it around. That person...maybe i'd make that person pay, though. At least in part.

Because you see, I have the right to name my items in almost any way I like, just as the person has the right to be offended.

It is a question of right versus right here. Nobody is wrong on either side, so...yeah, i'd ask the person to pay me the renaming.

Just me, heh?

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] May 28 2007 8:30 PM EDT

No, Red, because it takes more than the ignorance of others to offend me. I'm Asian, and I've had every racist Asian term and stereotype applied to me. Those are just words to me, just words. You'd probably get me more upset by calling me stupid or saying Spider-Man 3 was good.

SBW May 28 2007 8:30 PM EDT

i'll pay for the renaming. JUST for Ranger. alright we settled?

[RX3]Cotillion May 28 2007 8:30 PM EDT

I'll pitch in to have it renamed if a admin can't do it (I don't see why not tho).

[RX3]Cotillion May 28 2007 8:32 PM EDT

Wait Jugg... You're saying if I came up to you in person, got in your face, and called you a really really nasty Asian stereotyped name, you wouldn't be the least bit perturbed? ... Just because they are words doesn't mean they don't hold significance.

Xenko May 28 2007 8:32 PM EDT

"Who has to spend money? ... and if you were black, and I were to have a picture of a KKK symbol or some crap written in the dirt on the back of my cars window, you wouldn't want me to wipe it off?"

I don't understand the comparison:
The Holocaust cloak vs. the holocaust cloak

KKK cloak vs. ???

SBW May 28 2007 8:33 PM EDT

I told ranger I got his back. If somebody's going to rename it, it's going to be me.

[RX3]Cotillion May 28 2007 8:35 PM EDT

It's the fact of something with sensitive backgrounds vs something with sensitive backgrounds. You might not think of the holocaust as anything because it didn't affect you. I'm sure there is at least ONE thing in your life that can offend you.

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] May 28 2007 8:36 PM EDT

Red, I just finished answering that question. "No, Red, because it takes more than the ignorance of others to offend me. I'm Asian, and I've had every racist Asian term and stereotype applied to me."

[RX3]Cotillion May 28 2007 8:39 PM EDT

Nerves o' steel! Guess your helmet is helping you eh?

Still, just because it doesn't offend you, doesn't mean I'm going to go around calling you something inappropriate. That right there is immature if you ask me.

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] May 28 2007 8:41 PM EDT

And there's a difference between the comparisons you're making. Obviously the KKK means few things other than the Ku Klux Klan. However, like Novice mentioned, the word "holocaust" is an actual word and doesn't always reference The Holocaust.

Xenko May 28 2007 8:43 PM EDT

What is another meaning for KKK, because I am unaware of one...?

SBW May 28 2007 8:43 PM EDT

kindle kind koreans?? o.O

[RX3]Cotillion May 28 2007 8:44 PM EDT

Clicky click clickster click.

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] May 28 2007 8:45 PM EDT

Kultur, I think you may have read my sentence incorrectly. I was trying to say if the KKK does mean anything other than Ku Klux Klan, there are few of them.

Xenko May 28 2007 8:47 PM EDT

You are right Juggernaut, I did misunderstand your point.

QBRanger May 28 2007 9:00 PM EDT

If one cannot understand why it offends me then all I can do is have pity on the new generation of people.

Novice in another story as he seems to take the exact opposite position of every post I make.

The word Holocaust is just not any word with any meaning. For those who do not understand its meaning, use google and find out.

di Lampedusa's admonition that "those who forget the past are bound to repeat it" is worth reiterating.

[RX3]Cotillion May 28 2007 9:07 PM EDT

"If one cannot understand why it offends me then all I can do is have pity on the new generation of people."

Seconded...

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] May 28 2007 9:10 PM EDT

Ranger, what are you talking about? We're not talking about history, we're talking about diction. I had a class called Holocaust, Genocide, and Crimes Against Humanity. No one's saying The Holocaust was acceptable, but I think it's stupid to get offended by something just because it has the word "holocaust" in it, especially when it's been shown that the name is taken from a source that wasn't referencing The Holocaust.

If you wanted to be offended by it, fine, go ahead. But you yourself said that you already brought it up with an admin and they said it was acceptable, so why would you make a thread about it?

AdminJonathan May 28 2007 9:15 PM EDT

This is like complaining about the movie Twins because many people died in the twin towers.

Holocaust was already a word before the Nazis started their Final Solution, guys.
