iPhone (in Off-topic)

QBsutekh137 June 29 2007 9:15 PM EDT

Well, you knew the hype had to reach even into CB-land...

Anyone have an iPhone yet? How does CB look on it?

I had the stark realization tonight that my OS won't work for it, so I am quite non-plussed. 10.3.9 has gotten me by all this way, with 10.5 only months away, and now I will HAVE to get Tiger in order to run the iPhone? That appears to be the very definition of "lame". But, ah well, I should see what wonders 10.4 holds, I suppose.

Beyond that, I am interested in all the iPhone feedback I can get. Getting one is practically a no-brainer for me: I'm already on AT&T (my two year contract expires in just two weeks), coverage in STL is decent, I am a fan of Apple products, and a user of iTunes in all ways. My Razr still does great, but it was free with rebate two years ago, and it has served its purpose.

Anyway, all thoughts about the iPhone are welcome, especially on the browsing aspect of it (that's mainly why I want one).

Miandrital June 29 2007 9:19 PM EDT

sute, you should know by know that apple 2.0 products are always much much better than the initial product. As sweet as it looks right know, imagine when the price tag is $100 less and it works on the 3G networks :)

QBsutekh137 June 30 2007 1:01 AM EDT

Sure, Mian, but I don't need either of those things. *smile*

Seriously? No one has one yet? Well, I guess I'll report when I get one...

Relic June 30 2007 1:12 AM EDT

I went to the store to get one tonight, but they were sold out, so I had to order the wife and I one. Hopefully it will get here soon. =)

QBsutekh137 June 30 2007 10:59 AM EDT

Yeah, I imagine I will find the same thing today, but at least I can get Tiger and get it installed. I'm still a bit miffed that 10.4 is required -- I keep forgetting that in a lot of ways, Apple is no better than Microsoft as far as putting the "force" on upgrades and such... :\ Ah well, I'm the doof who is going and buying stuff anyway, so I can't really talk! *smile*

Miandrital June 30 2007 11:52 AM EDT

I hear that!

I have a perfect (unopened) copy of Final Cut Pro sitting around, but I can't install it because I don't have 10.3. I am just waiting for Leopard to come out since it will likely be the last mac OS to support my computer (G4).

th00p June 30 2007 11:53 AM EDT

The $600 is misleading. They make you pay $500 deposit so they can discourage people from selling them on eBay, a $500 tab that they pay you back over the life of the contract. I've also heard they make you pay something like $120 to add all the cool stuff that they show on the commercials.

QBsutekh137 June 30 2007 12:09 PM EDT

Where did you get that information? At the Apple Store, I just got the end of the order (didn't place it yet), and the cost was 599 for the phone plus estimated sales tax (that kind of sucks). But there was no charge related to the service contract or anything like that.

Why (and how?) would they charge an extra $500 as some sort of service fee? Where did you even hear that?

QBsutekh137 June 30 2007 1:28 PM EDT

Right now I am looking at an iPhone and my receipt -- no extra charge. Just the iPhone, Tiger, and tax. So, not sure what you are hearing, th00p, but I would say it is in error.

Fought three battles from the Apple Store! Who-oo! Not the easiest to use, but it runs CB!

th00p June 30 2007 6:36 PM EDT

Sorry for the bad info, heard the experience from my mom (remind me never to listen to her again).

QBRanger June 30 2007 6:58 PM EDT

I already use AT&T so getting the phone for me is not a problem.

However with the EDGE network it is far slower than the 3G network my current phone is on-The Blackjack.

Yes, the iPhone looks great, seems easy to use, but for 600 bucks, I would rather spend it on more cb2 :)

In a few months, I am sure we will see the price go down at least 200 bucks for both models of the phone and hopefully they will upgrade the speed to the 3G network. Then perhaps, once all the bugs are worked out, I may then buy one.

But like everything I have ever bought right out of the gate, something is buggy and has to be fixed. This is one time my mind is going to win over my heart and I will wait a bit until it is a proven commodity.

But that is just me.

AdminJonathan June 30 2007 9:51 PM EDT

I'm also on AT&T already, but I'm waiting for 3G and memory card support before I even think about it.

It would also be nice to fit my whole song library on it if it's really going to be an ipod replacement as well as just a better smartphone.

QBsutekh137 July 1 2007 12:44 AM EDT

I wouldn't hold my breath on a price drop -- iPods now are the same price they were years ago -- they just get more stuff added to them.

I, too, am wondering how future iPods will play out. One would think they would make an iPhone-like iPod with more space, but then they cannibalize their iPhone market... But my 40 GB iPod is about to get too small... Tricky!

At least Tiger is working pretty well... You hve to love an OS upgrade where performance on general tasks actually INCREASES, along with new functionality.

Any hey, at least I got to show some YouTube vids and look up a few trivia questions on Google tonight at a friend's birthday dinner. *smile* Such capability is new to me! This is my first smart-phone...

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] July 1 2007 2:18 AM EDT

I have a question. I'm on Cingular, but I heard Cingular has fused with AT&T, but it very clearly says that I still have "Cingular" as my network. So would the iPhone work for me?

QBsutekh137 July 1 2007 1:15 PM EDT

As far as I know, yes...cingular is now AT&T. You can see if you can log in to AT&T's cellular site, and that means you are golden if it recognizes your phone number and matches to your account...

AdminG Beee July 2 2007 9:55 AM EDT

Regarding waiting for a price drop, I wouldn't hold your breath...

The cost of goods sold after some case studies I've seen came in at $170 - $195 for the 4GB and 8GB models respectively. A respectable profit margin would seem to present itself for either $500 or $600 iPhone model. The more expensive 8GB unit would command the highest margins of the two.

Generally it's conceived to be a nifty piece of hardware on the outside and the User Interface is groundbreaking in many ways.

Despite external simplicity however the internal implementation is complex with many secondary operations, fastener screws and difficult orientations needed for assy. China is a near-must for production which suggests future margin increases as Apple procurement and assy costs drop.

There's a daughtercard used for the wireless functions which suggest future room to upgrade or otherwise change out the wirelss portion of the design while holding the rest of the iPhone constant.

Speed is definitely an issue with the iPhone as is the battery life. Cost of ownership inc account requirements topped with "over-hype" are potential stumbling blocks.

2MB camera phone is now the minimum requirement, but you Americans aren't as big on that as you will be when you catch up with the rest of us ;)

QBsutekh137 July 2 2007 10:30 AM EDT

Not sure why battery life is an issue -- battery life has been widely reported to be spectacular.

AdminJonathan July 2 2007 11:01 AM EDT

isuppli estimated iphone parts costs at $230 and $245 for 4GB and 8GB. I've seen people calling those low, but I haven't seen anyone call them high.

Either way, Apple certainly does like high margins, no argument there.

AdminG Beee July 2 2007 11:15 AM EDT

Yeah, one report often differs greatly from the next.

Portelligent are quoting $170 - $195. They also beat down on the battery life which after Sut's comments seems to be off the mark and perhaps a "jump the gun reaction" based on perception before the launch.

One thing for sure, as with the iPod it's a money maker for Apple.

Company I work for supplies the sexy little chip that lets you rotate the screen (also used in the Wii). Alas we don't supply the 2MB camera sensor :(

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] July 2 2007 5:44 PM EDT

So uh, like in a year, how much do you think the iPhones will cost?

Josh [Cult of the Valaraukar] July 6 2007 6:47 AM EDT

Why waste money on an iPhone? Save up for the iHouse coming out in 2011. Your whole phone transformed into a computer. iCar estimated 2013.

stoner14 July 6 2007 6:49 AM EDT

what about the iplanet josh? probably coming out around 2020

QBJohnnywas July 6 2007 6:56 AM EDT

Grrr. Apple. I got a new iPod at Christmas. Of course it wouldn't work with the version of iTunes that I had so I downloaded the new iTunes, only to find that it wouldn't work with my OS. So one upgrade to the OS later....

And now...dead drive and all the problems that's causing.....I can really see me getting an iPhone. Yeah right....not....

Xiaz on Hiatus July 6 2007 7:13 AM EDT

I guess the main problem I can see with the iPhone is (not available in Australia anytime soon), since it's essentially an IPod + Web Browser + Mobile Phone - the battery life isn't gonna be very long if you use it for all these purposes.

I mean, considering the characteristics of batteries - given the the device requires a relatively high amount of energy, the battery can only be a certain size (small), the battery life is therefore compromised.

That said, it's an Apple product, it's chic, you can't deny the design team at Apple are good.

QBOddBird July 6 2007 7:26 AM EDT

Agreed, they have a nifty way of taking their geek gear and turning it into sleek, sexy pieces of iFad that everyone wants. ^_^

QBBast [Hidden Agenda] July 6 2007 7:47 AM EDT

I'll trade in my Zen & my Nokia, if I can get a sleek, sexy, Apple-designed iGeek with my iPhone.

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] July 6 2007 1:53 PM EDT

I'll be your iGeek, Bast!

QBBast [Hidden Agenda] July 6 2007 2:05 PM EDT

You can apply again when the designers at Apple have finished with you.

QBsutekh137 July 6 2007 2:41 PM EDT

I don't expect the prices to come down much, ever. What will increase is the battery, processor, screen, drive space, bandwidth, etc. Actually, I would think they might come down around $100 or so, but I don't expect retail to get lower than $400 and $500, even in a couple years.

However, perhaps the network will subsidize the phone, like they have done with some others. This will be even more likely once the phone is opened up to be used with any provider.

xiaz, the battery does OK. Basically, with normal use (audio, vids, Internet, email, phoning -- little bit of each), the thing can last a full day. One nice thing is that most iPod devices work with it. For example, I can charge the iPhone in my inMotion Altec Lansing sound machine at work. When I get home, I can dock it or plug it in downstairs (had an extra USB dock cable from my last iPod). If I ever had to do more driving or be in the road for an extended time, I would get a car adapter (haven't yet).

In other words, pretty much the same as you would have to do for any high0functioning smartphone. What DOES suck is the price for replacing the battery. It looks like with cost, shipping, and phone "loaner" fee, that process is going to cost around $100 right there. All because Apple wanted to solder the battery to the phone. That's weak. If I don't keep good charge for 2 years (at least), that fee will be a kick in the teeth.

Zoglog[T] [big bucks] July 6 2007 4:28 PM EDT

I'm happy enough with my Creative ZenTouch, LG phone and internet at home thankyou, would not pay those ridiculous prices for a few extra abilities, especially not for an Apple product.

QBsutekh137 July 6 2007 5:03 PM EDT

Yeah, doesn't sound like there's any bias there, Zog *wink* Apple products have worked better for me as a product line than anything else I have ever tried. *shrug* Everyone's mileage varies...

If I had all of those things, I would have opted out too. All I had was a RAZR and an older-model iPod. Email, visual voicemail, messaging, and being able to browse the web are all new to me, so the benefit was there.

If I already had a laptop and/or Treo and/or video iPod, I wouldn't have gotten an iPhone, at least not yet.

Zoglog[T] [big bucks] July 6 2007 5:19 PM EDT

Yeah Sut, everyone's tastes vary.

I've had the LG phone for near 3 years (was contract but now PAYG since you get free credit whenever people text or call you). The buttons honestly have started becoming a little unresponsive but it's still fine for calls, texts and checking up on sports news which is my main uses for it :)
The ZenTouch is an amazing piece of technology and is cheaper than most alternatives.
And I'm never in a position to use the internet when I'm out (usually busy working, drinking or shopping lol).

I can see why people would do it but as a student with more than competent equipment already I feel that I have all I need :)

Relic July 6 2007 6:31 PM EDT

Woot! First post with the iphone!
To each his own of course but I have to say I am digging the cool features, large screen, and the touch screen is stellar.

QBRanger July 6 2007 8:10 PM EDT

Can you change the active character on the new iPhone?

On the phone I have now, the Cingular 5125, I cannot seem to get the active character changed. I have to do that from my home or a friends PC.

bartjan July 6 2007 8:13 PM EDT

Ranger: try /change_party.tcl?party_id=49621 to switch to Koyaanisqatsi.

QBRanger July 6 2007 8:20 PM EDT

works perfect.

I guess to change back to the current tourney character one would change the number to 102709?

Thanks!!!

QBsutekh137 July 6 2007 9:01 PM EDT

Am able to change chars fine on the iPhone.

stoner14 July 6 2007 9:31 PM EDT

pretty awesome

ResistanZ2 [The Knighthood] July 6 2007 10:46 PM EDT

Bast, why would Apple designers have to work on me? I'm already sleek and sexy...
