Archery/bow a complete waste of time (in General)

Yukk March 4 2008 3:29 PM EST

Well, I was so annoyed with how useless my archer with a $32M bow and named arrows was that I unequipped the bow and ran through my fightlist.
Results: everything exactly the same as with the bow apart from Giggety Giggety who occasionally beats me anyway.

So I just threw away:

A Behemoth's Imbrued Longbow [6x1530] (+112) $32M NW
46,617 Funeral-thirsty Arrows [8x1] (+0)
ST 1,600,065
DX 1,347,619
Archery 530,812 405,200 1.00
An Elven Cloak [4] (+10)
A Pair of Elven Boots [10] (+24)
A Pair of Beleg's Gloves [3] (+11)
A Helm of Clearsight [-5] (+8)
A Buckler of Mandos [10] (+22)

from my archer based team to basically no effect.

I win due to well 90% due to cheesing my tat into a RoBF
and 10% other trained ED/EOs.

Congrats, you've now figured out that what you're doing isn't working...
It certainly isn't archery or the elb's fault...

QBRanger March 4 2008 3:35 PM EST

Congrats also,

Now you found out that 1.35M dex along with a +112 bow is not nearly enough to compete. You need at least 2.5M dex and a +150 to even start hitting evasion minions.

Basically, unless you have tons of CB2 and a massive dex (or EC like me) archery is useless.

But I am sure others will say the stat of affairs is just fine-as long as you keep missing them.

Yukk March 4 2008 3:38 PM EST

No, I understand that I haven't spent enough $USD and I shouldn't have kept throwing good CBD after bad for so long.
I think it is partially archery's fault. As Ranger is fond of saying Archers spend their XP on ST, DX and ST/3 Archery.
If someone else spends as much XP on evasion as the archer has on DX alone, then all of the above are worth 0. Unless they have a $USD bow to overcome that deficiency.
If I was to throw all my gear away and retrain to a DD then I'd be training one stat. Maybe I'd retrain my DX to evasion and the rest to DD, who knows.
It is sad that I don't want to retrain everything and throw away all my gear. I know that's how Ranger stays on top.

How much exp have you wasted training EC on your archer? How much overall wasted exp do you have since you're training DM with AMF and EC?

You're also using PL with GA as well as having no native HP on your battery. You've obviously vastly undertrained your DX being that you're adorned in elven gear and still have 300k DX less than your ST. I'm pretty sure you can only pull off the Ranger-DX-Trick if you've got a massive EC (which you don't) and a massive PTH on your weapon (which you also don't).

I think this may be a strategy issue rather than an evasion problem.

not a complete waste of time for me. i got 21 dudes on my fight list now

Hyrule Castle [Defy] March 4 2008 4:19 PM EST

yea drudge thats fine for now...on account no one has a massive evasion at 500k mpr...wait till u get to the 1m + mpr or the dead zone

TheHatchetman March 4 2008 4:42 PM EST

that's where the massive ones start...

Yukk, your issue is also in your XP dilution, you've been a 3 minion team for a long time now, and I've often seen an RoE on your enchanters, so I would imagine your tank isn't the strongest of minions. factoring in your HUGE HP boost from AS, you're effectively trying to run a 1.3m MPR tank at the 2.5m MPR level... I could unlearn, and get a larger archer than you currently have (3.5m HP 2m ST, 1.8m DX, and maxed archery) with my char who's only 1.45m MPR.

Net worth is another battle to be considered, as a +112 bow really isn't enough at that level. Your two options as far as that go are USD or spending your next 3-6 months worth of income solely on the + of your bow, which is currently giving you discouraging results. Difficult choice to make, as nobody likes parting with hard-earned cash, and the other option involves risking the next 3-6 months of income on something that may not turn out any better...

You would also likely be a better archer with ToA, but then mage teams will be comin atcha harder, and you wouldn't have the safety net of RoBF damage against high evasions... But like has been said earlier, your net worth is the issue. 2.5m MPR, using a tat, and still having only ~116m nw... Sounds like a mage team... =/

Hatchet, you're pretty spot on on a lot of stuff as is Tezmac.
My exp dilution on the archer isn't too bad. The EC is a bit of a throw-away, but it was trained to get a 100 fights/day farmer off my back. It's small. As for the 3 minion team, what Hatchet says is something I have realised I could do a while ago, but haven't.
The PL I only started training about a week ago and I was planning on going back to RoS once I was done with my RoE, but my experience in the last week or so made me realise that would be a waste of time, so I trained out the 6M I had sitting on an enchanter into AS.
The PL is small enough that anyone losing a large chunk of their damage to the PL won't be doing enough to kill me. On the other hand, knocking a chunk off the larger damages should enable my GA to not be overwhelmed.
The DM is also small enough to take out most protections.
I'm not playing totally blindly (apart from the EC)

My main point in this thread is that all the people whining about mages being too weak and archers being super-powers has to realise that not everyone is Mikel and company who have invested serious money and time into their weapon. Knock the weapon cap down and nobody can play, or just be a normal punter like me and invest a year and a half into one team hardly missing any BA and find yourself in a hole.

Let's be straight. I'm not really bitching. I'm in the top 20 or so and until this week, I was fighting with a RoE. That means my enchanters were kicking butt and taking names. My archer does his bit stopping most teams from fighting UP at me.

I've thought of spending some USD but I'm not going to spend more than I already give Jon. I knew from the start that without the cash a tank would be hard and here I am. What everyone said is true. NW may be King, but USD is definitely Queen

TheHatchetman March 4 2008 5:15 PM EST

hehe, I didn't comment on the oddities that didn't seem to go together cuz I saw when I attacked you earlier that they were all pretty small and assumed they had their purpose :P
