New bot check system please (in General)

bashem March 26 2008 8:06 AM EDT

The idea of a bot check is to stop bots but not get in the way of any players way. The writing is very hard to see specially when your using high res(makes things tiny).

So I'm asking for a clearer system, thanks.

Flamey March 26 2008 8:08 AM EDT

If you can't see it because of your resolution you must be having trouble reading other things on the screen as well? Turn down the resolution a bit.

Wizard'sFirstRule March 26 2008 8:13 AM EDT

actually the bot check itself is fairly annoying. When you are on a roll with fights (pressing enter repeatedly) and hit 2 bot check in 3 fights really tests my temper.

PoisoN March 26 2008 8:20 AM EDT

I don't think that Jon will change the system. But it's possible to write a JavaScript that checks for screen resolution and upscales the picture. If not Jon maybe Verifex could implement something like this in his script.

The only thing I ask for is to increase the number of tries before it locks you out. I mean, come on, a few of them are nearly impossible to read, and if you get caught with two of them, or you just make a minor typo, you're screwed.

I say we increase the number of tries to five. And maybe reduce the ban from one hour to 20 minutes, but I'd be happy with just the extra tries.

Wizard'sFirstRule March 26 2008 8:56 AM EDT

the last known uses of bot to read bot checks give a correct reading at about 83% (wiki). I am sure that a bot can read it correctly at least once every 5 tries.

Lord Bob March 26 2008 9:07 AM EDT

Crap. Then how about extending the amount of time from two minutes to five? Sometimes I make a quick click-through without looking and get up to get a drink or something. When I come back, I'm locked out.

QBJohnnywas March 26 2008 9:13 AM EDT

If bot checks cause you problems then take more time over your fighting. Pay attention. For the most part if you get locked out for failing the bot check it's your own fault.

;)

You'll quickly learn to live with them... and then maybe after that... you'll become "one of us" and learn to love them!

Ulord[NK] March 26 2008 2:02 PM EDT

haven't seen a bot check complaint thread in a long while. They are not that bad after about... 1 week of playing. Seriously...

QBRanger March 26 2008 2:07 PM EDT

Perhaps one should be botcheck free for the first week. Then slowly ramp up to speed.

Also, is there not a place you can practice botchecks? If so, should that not be in the tutorial?

tasuki [UFC] March 26 2008 2:21 PM EDT

I think I been penalized over 400k. It is those annoying f and t that gets to me.

I have to learn that if it looks like a t, then it is an f...

AdminQBnovice [Cult of the Valaraukar] March 26 2008 2:23 PM EDT

the f has a tail

People who develop automated bot systems are very clever, the bot system just needs to be slightly more clever then those writing scripts. If we have something VERY easy to read and understand, then by extension it would be fairly easy to write a bot to read it as well.

Thats why the bot checks are kinda difficult. But don't worry, you'll get used to them.

"But don't worry, you'll get used to them"

To illustrate this, in February, the person that made the most errors at the botchecks made 26 errors; #10 on that list made 7 errors. For the entire month.

TheHatchetman March 26 2008 2:50 PM EDT

try out bartjan's bot-check trainer ;)

j'bob March 26 2008 2:57 PM EDT

From the wiki
After a "grace period" for new players, you will encounter Bot Checks to prevent automated (hence, robot or "bot") cheating during fighting .

and there's a link to the trainer and some examples somewhere in there too. sigh. if only we as a people would read the wiki more. we need to learn to appreciate the wiki. to "feel" the wiki... and yes... to LOVE the wiki. only then can we really love ourselves.
:D

Also, suspension is only one hour. That means the only way for a bot check to really hurt you is if you are within 30/27/24/21/18 BA of 160 depending on your regen rate. A truly unlikely event... That or you managed to get yourself banned for the last hour of exp hour. That being said, you still have the option of buying yourself out of the penalty period (usually not worth it). So it is quite forgiving for occasional screw-ups.

I bet I'm at the top of that list :P

I hate them with a passion and usually fail one every 2-3 days.

chuck1234 March 26 2008 5:02 PM EDT

Actually, negotiating the botcheck involves a fairly robust learning curve, so it is inevitable that you will be making mistakes at first. But, after your brain has trained to read the script, you end up making almost no mistakes.

In fact, since new players are bound to fail botchecks in the beginnning, I'd like to suggest that the botcheck be one method of monitoring suspected MULTI players. Any NUB player who sails smoothly through all botchecks is either a genius or a Multi, so to be kind to the rare geniuses that have a habit of making a beeline for CB2, they should be placed under an "index of suspicion" as the pros call it, rather than being outed as multi.

Blarg March 26 2008 5:05 PM EDT

I absolutely hated the bot checks when i started, and would end up failing alot. After I actually focused on them for awhile, my brain just learned how to read them. Obviously, with Mikel, this isn't the case with everyone, but hopefully if you give it a little time they will become clearer.

j'bob March 26 2008 5:42 PM EDT

Well, I recall having VERY little trouble with the bot checks. My biggest problem was usually walking away before I realized one was there and it timing out. As for me being smartier than some of the folks I've seen having discussions in different threads... well, I'm gonna go ahead and bet against it. Hmmm... that leaves one thing....
BURN THE MULTI!!! (oh this is gonna hurt)
