Gender oddity? (in General)

Goodfish September 21 2008 2:33 PM EDT

"The Sorceress takes damage from his own Cone of Cold (134757)!"

Perhaps we can get a way to toggle gender of our minions? As someone who kind of likes assigning roles, forcing me to select male names is a little bit of a headache.

Yes, this is a nitpick.

Better than that, we should just have gender neutral pronouns.

"The Sorceress takes damage from his or her own Cone of Cold (134757)!"

or

"The Sorceress takes damage from its own Cone of Cold (134757)!"

?

Both are awkward.

I agree with this. I don't know how other people play, but me and DJ always have scenarios of our team in our heads. It's what makes it fun for me and gives each team I have its own personality, so these little details are actually pretty important.

Better yet, create your own unique battle statements (although this would be a lot of work). Sort of like how named weapons have their names displayed when they hit, but more individual.

Although my major nit is with the gender pronouns in the battle log.

from 'their' own Cone of Cold (134757)!"

Who is _forcing_ you to choose a male name? Nobody has a gun to your head saying "If you choose your minion name to be Barbie, I'm gonna blow your head off!"

By the way, if you _kind of like_ assigning roles, then it shouldn't be a big deal for you to accept this extremely minor "oddity".

Oh, and if "being forced" to select a male name gives you a headache, I would really wonder what things you worry about other than choosing a (fe)male minion name on a game on the internet.

In any case, just change 'his' to 'their' to keep the ownership of whose Cone of Cold intact. A simple fix. Worth changing? Doubt it.

SNK, be nice bud. xD
Anyways, I like it. It's a small change, and should be easy to implement, but it should have been done from the start.

"They" and "their" are plural pronouns, exclusively. "It" is the only truly gender-neutral singular pronoun, while "they" simply appears to lack specificity because we use the same word for groups of any or mixed gender.

If it were changed to "their", I would be forced to name all my minions "Al and Bob" or "Dorothy and Martha." Of course, then, I would need the option to toggle the conjugation of my verbs, because "Erica, Ted, and Jordan takes damage from their own Cone of Cold" would still be incorrect.

I would like being able to make custom statements, though. Like "Jon smashed a guitar on n00bs."

Do you know how long it took to get this:

"prefers to keep his or her email address private,"

changed from "prefers to keep his email address private,"

baby steps...

;)

sigh, isn't changemonth great?

Goodfish September 21 2008 6:25 PM EDT

It's an archaic relic left from CB1. Maybe I'm being a perfectionist. SNK, I realize I don't have to have all male minions, but the "gender confusion" in the battle log is a bit off-kilter for me, and makes me cringe a little bit every time I read it.

And yes, custom "attacks" would be awesome: "Axel down-picked a wicked tune through Samantha", for example. But let's not get ahead of ourselves- like BarzooMonkey said- baby steps. =D

>>sigh, isn't changemonth great?

I'm not trying to push a stupid change onto Jon. Just something I noticed a while back and it's been bothering me ever since, I guess.

I just wish minions had a little more customization- that's one of the big draws of CB, for me, is that you can have your minion do whatever you want them to do (virtually). So why not show that in battle logs? Since it's all simply text-based (as opposed to adding skills and whatnot which involves formula and a bunch of other crazy stuff I know nothing about), I just can't imagine it NOT being worth doing.

It'd at least add some flavor to a rather stagnant battle log, which has been doing the same stuff for over five years. I'm sick of reading "The Barbarian crunched Bananco." ;)
