Ranged damage (in General)

What does the damage on slings and crossbows depend on?
I assume that DX is still the determining factor in hitting, but I'm not totally clear on the damage done

ST and the X modifier on the ranged weapon (or any weapon for what it matters)

Also the + modifier could make you deal multiple hits, in this way you could also do more damage :)
